My car is overheating. I changed the thermostat and it didn't fix it.?

Is there anything else I should check before I change the water pump?

It is a 1989 Toyota Celica ST 2.0L 3SFE

ok you mentioned the water pump...no need to change the water pump unless it's leaking now if it is then you need to change it. There are several components to the cooling system of a car. radiator, radiator hoses, water pump, radiator fan and the electronics that run it. You may want to test out the radiator fan by letting the car heat up for a bit and see if it turns on if not there's your problem...but...the fan could still be good you might want to hook up a direct connection to it from the battery if it runs then there's a fuse or relay blown or even the sensor that tells the computer that the car is heating up to tell the fan to kick on...more than likely this is where the problem lies if it's not the thermostat.

yeah check the radiator cap------ they have to hold so much pressure to work right
run engine with no therostat and see if it cools

belt to water pump

flush the cooling system to is trash is in it
Perform a coolant system flush. Your radiator could be clogged.
Check the pulley on the water pump to see if it wiggles, that will tell you if the pump is bad, if it doesnt wiggle or make noise when you turn it, dont waste money on replacing it, you can also check the radiator cap, and radiator.

Also run it and see if the fan kicks on.
check the radiator and cooling fans
Right next to the thermostat you have what is called a tempature sending sensor or unit replace that and check your radiator for leaks. Also make sure your radiator lines are not collapsing. (check for creasing) on your water pump look at the bottom a lot of pumps have a blow out hole and it will be stained
Does the radiator fan(s) turn on at all? Radiator cap functioning properly? Properly filled coolant? If yes to all, I'd consider the radiator. The waterpump is belt driven and unless it's not spinning properly or broken off the shaft then it should be ok. Usually, if the pump breaks, you can here a noise and it leaks. The radiator can lose its cooling efficiency as the fins get damaged by rocks, bugs, etc.
simple on this car #1 the fan is it working at operating temp? #2 does the radiator have cold spots at operating temp? #3 is the radiator clear of debris in front? #4 Is the water pump leaking? #5 do you have coolant leaking inside your car? #6 Do you have a lot of steam coming out of the exhaust pipe? Answers : #1temp sensor/wiring/fuse~~#2 plugged radiator ~~#3 restricted air flow~~#4 worn out pump~~#5leaking heater core (replace) #6 internal engine coolant leak.
dont jump in and assume its the water pump, check the fan and see if its coming on,and also flush out the entire cooling system, your radiator and heater core could be stopped up.you can check the radiator!, after you drove the car and got it all warmed up,shut it down and feel the radiator, next to the fan and see if you feel cold spots,if you do then the radiator is clogged up.
