Could my thermostat in my car need to be replaced?

i have a 1997 eldorado and lately the temp gauge is going pass the middle to the first line. it comes back down but only when i start driving for a while. the car is running at 215 degrees and gets up top 235. i know the head gaskets are hell to fix on this car so im trying to see whats the issue. could it be the thermostat needs to be replaced. i bought the car used and don't know when they changed it out last i have owned it for 1 year now.

Could be the thermostat. It may be sticking closed or partially closed, then opening fully when the temperature gets hotter. It's a cheap fix if you do it yourself.

Also, be sure there's sufficient coolant in the system. Gotta check the obvious along with the not so obvious.

Late ignition timing can cause overheating problems.

if it was the thermostat

then you should be getting no heat out of the vents

i would check the oil, maybe even change it if you havent since you got it

and flush the coolant out, you can replace the thermo if you want, theyre cheap, but i dont think thats the problem
