Help, any mechanics out there, i have no heating in my car, the kids are freezing???????????????????

WE HAVE TRIED CHANGING THE THERMOSTAT. I HAVE A 1.9 DIESEL RENAULT CLIO. I JUST DONT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO TRY. PLEASE HELP AS MY KIDS ARE FREEZING WHEN WE GO OUT IN THE CAR.
Help, any mechanics out there, i have no heating in my car, the kids are freezing???????????????????
as a quick solution, you can buy car heaters that plug into the ciggy lighter...as regards the main problem, it may pay to check that the fuses are ok, l am not sure if you are saying the fans are not blowing at all..if they are not working in terms of not blowing then its most likely a fuse, the fuse holder is usually under the steering wheel and fuses are in a little compartment with a plan that tells you which does what, the fuses are blade fuses, and have a plastic end with two connecting metal blades they pull out towards you and have a thin strip of metal in the plastic end that if seperated shows the fuse has gone.

After thats checked and ok then l would look at the advice given already on a heater valve, and last of all it could be a blocked matrix.....the heater in a car is best described as a mini radiator, heated by the water circulating round the engine, then an electric fan blows the warm air from the matrix over you tootsies they vcan get bolcked and then need replacing, this can be expensive in terms of garage time.

get some hot water bottles for them!
what year is the car?

take it to the dealer or a radiator shop, for an estimate and/or inspection.

happy holidays.
If the engine is coming up to operating temperatur then it sounds like the valve that opens to let the hot water into the car is stuck shut.

Open the hood with the engine warmed up. Look between the engine and the firewall (the metal wall below the windshield that separates the passenger compartment from the engine compartment)

Look for 2 smallish water hoses, should be around 1 inch in diameter running from the engine to the inside of the car. on one of the hoses should be a valve with a control cable attached. Have someone move the temperature control from hot to cold to hot and you watch to see if the valve is moving.

If the valve moves you need to replace it... chances are the control cable broke or came loose... you can then manually move it to allow the hot water into the heater..

Good Luck
try haveing the cooling system flushed.
You have a blockage in a heater hose check if water is coming back to your engine through the heater hoses.
I agree with shovel kicker... but first open the radiator and make shure your coolant level is full, then when your car is warmed up check the heater valve, it could be run by a cable or small vaccum hose. If the vaccum hose came off, put it back on, be carefull they are brittle and will snap easily, the same for a cable, if it came off put it back on, it could be frozen stuck, like rusted, spray some wd-40 on it to loosen it up. Good luck.
Have you checked your fuse panel???
see if there is a bleeder on top of the elbow were you put the thermostat. if so open it up slowly while running to let the air out. then your heater should start working. be careful to stay away from moving parts. col lent should squirt out.i you don't you may have it have the system purged. air removed
if the temp gauge is reading normal if you do not have agauge only a temp light test the water temp by holding the top hose and the bottem if both are hot the car is running at the correct temp then locate the heater tap which should no tbe hard it will have a water hose going in one side and out the other remove the to hose and join them together with hose joiner they turn heater fan on with the motor running you shoud have hot air blowing into the cabin
You never mentioned if the fan blower is working inside your car, check fuses.

Make sure there is enough water in the radiator and no air locks, feel all the rubber pipes to see if they all get hot! Give them all a good 'hand-pump' squeeze, and see if it dislodges/moves anything about. How do you know the new thermostat is working ?? Try taking it back as faulty!

Also if you feel all the carpets inside the car, to check for any water which could have leaked out of the heater matrix (internal radiator) under the dashboard! The heat should come through if there is no leaks at all or air pockets in the system, and the heater fan-blows.

Run the engine to see how long it takes the engine's cooling fan to cut in! Get it really hot, it might help especially if you do a lot of small journeys!

Pull the bottom hose off and re-fill the system with new water and anti freeze.

Just a few ideas.
Do you have a smell of antifreeze in the car and a puddle of unexplained origin? If so, you blew out the heater core and you will not have any heat until you get it fixed. You could also have a hole in the radiator. If you cannot afford to get it fixed right now, may I suggest one of those heaters you plug into the cigarette lighter??
I must say you know alot more about cars than all the women I know! I had the same problem last winter. Its got to be one of 3 things:

1. Check the coolant level is topped up to the maximum level.

2. Check that you have engine oil topped up to the maximum level.

3. Make sure that all fuses are in good working order.

The problem may have been caused by a hole in a radiator pipe, so get those checked out by a garage. The above action should sort out the heating and save you about 拢300.
First check header tank or radiator is topped up to the correct level .(NOT HOT), Has the car got an air bleed for the water,(It looks like a nurled screw) and is userly on a water hose , some Renualts have some dont , if it has wait untill engine is cool unscrew nurled screw but do not take out completly it has a bleed hole in it, when it is released then run engine with rad cap on untill water stars rushing out scew nurled screw up tight then top up rad, replace cap . if all that doesnt work then you need a new heator matrix displacment unit , your old one is blocked. not a job for an ammiture im afraid, if its the fan not working check fuses
Watch to see if your engine is heating up properly. Firstly top the radiator up to the brim with water, then drive the car round for 5 minutes to heat the engine up. It should be warn by then and showing on the temp gauge. Physics dictate if your engine is running normally under these circumstances then you will have heat. If you still haven't it is something to do with the switches on the dashboard. Call a mobile mechanic out that specialises in electronics and he will probably identify the fault in 5 minutes and fix it within an hour. You would have a break in the selector telling the car to switch to warm air which would be causing it in tis case.

You don't need to worry about blockages or leaks. The heater matrix is a part of the coolant system circuit. If it were leaking or blocked this would all come direct from your engine resulting in you cooking your engine or running out of water (which would probably end up all over your feet).

I'm 99.99999% certain that one of these two problems are what is wrong with your car.

My heater in my car won't work , please help?

ok I have a 1996 Nissan sentra , my heater blows cold air , it doesn't link any water in or out the car, I change the thermostats yet it still doesn't work , Please help ,
My heater in my car won't work , please help?
It could be the heater controls. Most cars in 96 had a cable type control some had the vacuum control. When you move the heat from hot to cold is it easy to move or have some Resistance? If easy then the cable may have fell off or broke. There is also a heater valve on the heater core that this cable goes to. If it is stuck on cold, because the cable problem, the heater hoses on the fire wall will be 1 hot %26amp; one cold. This does not mean the heater core is plugged just the valve is not open. I wish I could do more for you online but its the best I can do from here, Good Luck! As far as the heater blending problem listed on the above answer this would only direct the HOT air to feet, face, or defrost, but it would still be hot air.
My heater in my car won't work , please help?
From what you have said it sounds like the heater core may be plugged. remember if that is the Original heater core and you have not changed the coolant in a while it could be plugged. If you nave the time have it checked and also have your Radiator checked to see if it is starting to clog up also. 13 years is a long time. have them checked just to be on the safe side
With the engine real hot and the heater on high heat, feel of the two black heater hoses that connect to the heater core (under your dash) at the passenger side firewall. They should be equally hot. If one's much colder, the hot engine coolant isn't flowing through the heater core and you probably need a new heater core because yours is plugged up. If both hoses are hot, then you've got a blower or air blend door problem under the dash assuming your engine coolant is running at 200 degrees Fahrenheit at the thermostat and there's no air trapped in your cooling system from a recent coolant change etc.
It sounds like you may have a bad heater core or something is restricting coolant from going through it.

My car heats up while I am driving fast and cools down instantly when i drive slow or idling. Problem?

Thermostat was changed. No difference. What could be the problem?
My car heats up while I am driving fast and cools down instantly when i drive slow or idling. Problem?
First, I assume the %26quot;heats up%26quot; means the engine/coolant temperature goes up as opposed to the temperature inside your car.

A few years back, I had the opposite problem that the temperature drops to normal at high speed while the car overheated at low speed or idle. It turned out that the fan motor for the radiator was dead. Anyhow, here is what I think,

- Your water pump is not functioning. This is the most likely cause. I changed my water pump by myself. You need a pro if you are not a handy person.

- Your radiator fan is rotating in the wrong direction (very unlikely, unless you serviced it recently)

How do i re-fill my car radiator without getting any ait locks?

can anyone help? i have a 1998 ford escort 1.6 16v zetec and i need to change my thermostat, i have no problem doing that its just i know im going to get an air lock as soon as i loose water from the thermostat when i change it, i just need to find out how to re-fill my radiator without getting an air lock, can you please help???

thanks
How do i re-fill my car radiator without getting any ait locks?
after fitting thermostat fill radiator turn your heater to hot dont need blower on leave top off expansion tank and let the engine idle you will see the water rising as air is escaping keep topping water up until no more air comes out the main reason for air locks is because people forget to turn heater up to hot this stops the small radiator inside the car from filling.
How do i re-fill my car radiator without getting any ait locks?
Run it up to Temperature with the water cap off

When its up there %26quot;squeeze%26quot; the water pipe below the rad so that the air bubbles come out in the opening of the water cap

When the bubbles stop and its just water coming to the surface then you've got rid of the air lock

Good luck
Fill it up, run it a while, and it should blow any air up to the top of the system, CAREFULLY..release the air by CAREFULLY removing the cap on the header tank, and then top up when it has cooled down a little.

i work @4am so i need sleep, but i can never catch these broads.

they are super evil jealous broads and i think its due to my hubby being blk as they are i am white..so my car is leakin water again...and i see the nastiness mucus spit on my car..i changed the thermostat, radiator, fan clutch , water pump ,plugs..what are they doing???

im pissed...to sum it up how do i catch these bitches???

So my car is overheating, and the windows are getting steamed up what could be the problem?

I already changed the thermostat and havent found any leaks.
So my car is overheating, and the windows are getting steamed up what could be the problem?
you are leaking anti-freeze in your heater core and blowing the steam onto your windshield
So my car is overheating, and the windows are getting steamed up what could be the problem?
    Heater core leak.
you may have a bad heater core
Have you checked the heater core?

A small crack or tear in one of your hoses?

Lose connection or hose not tightened properly?

I would drive the car for a bit, but not to the point where it over heats, then park it and wait. Check under the car and see if you can find any anti-freeze on the ground.
There is most likely a leak in your heater core and your vehicle is low on radiator fluid. Do you smell a sweet smell inside the car as well? I would bring it to a shop and have them pressure test the system to diagnose exactly where the problem is.
You may need to do a flush of your cooling system. If it removes the blockage or build-up in the tubes of your heater, that will fix it. If the blockage has set up permanently, you may need a new heater core.
    heater core leak......

My heat in my car doesnt work!!?

I let my sister borrow my car and the car started to overheat. So We changed the thermostat and now my heat isnt working. It is blowing air but its not getting hot and minnesota is a cold place. Its a 94 accord
My heat in my car doesnt work!!?
check your fan motor then water pump if negative check oil 4 water if yes you have cracked head or block
My heat in my car doesnt work!!?
    Sucks to be you
transfer to manila... and you wont be needing that device :))
I'm not saying you did, but are you sure you didn't put the thermostat in up side down,it's easy to make that mistake.

If that is OK make sure you got all the air out, start your engine and Waite for it to get hot enough to open the thermostat you will see the antifreeze go down then fill it up before you put the cap back on.
you could be low in coolant due to a leak, or the radiator may have some cold spots, which means blockage, or the thermostat could be stuck closed, due to coolant temp sensor or sending unit faulty, or the heater core could be stopped up. first check to see that coolant is full, then crank car and look at temp guage and when it gets to 200-225, see if the cooling fan is coming on.. also feel the hose coming off the engine going to the bottom part of the radiator is hot, also check the hose going into the firewall to heater core--inlet hose should be hot and outlet hose a little cooler, have someone check radiator with infrared thermometer for cold spot.. If the coolant is not flowing, then you will not have adequate heat..
Check to see if the thermostat is in upside down, also check your coolant level, it must be to the top of the radiator.
there my be a air bubble in the heater box.
First: did you replace the right recomended thermonstat for your specific region, also did you install it correctly with a coil pointed toward the engine not to the radiator? since you lived in Minnesota, a hotter thermonstat is recommended ( not 220F or 275 degF, because this is when it starts to open, you want a lower temp~ 180 degF-195 degF ). Second, since it was overheated, did you checked for enough coolant has been added ( leave your engine running with radiator cap open, at a certain temperature, thermonstat will open and drawn in water then shut off your engine and add more water ). Third, 40 % antifreeze with 60% water ( it boils at 100 degF). Last, check your temperature connecting cable, it could came off; broke or froze up? Last of all, if all the above suggestions have been inspected and all good, last thing you want to replace is your heater evaporator, it could gone bad since you uses it extensively in cold region.

Will the heater auxiliary valve pump cause the car to run hot?

The only thing I can add to this is I already changed my water pump, thermostat, flushed the radiator(at a machine shop), changed the fan clutch, and checked the heater core. The oil is not creamy or milky. When you run the car, the upper and lower radiator hose is really tight, one of the hoses that run to the heater auxiliary valve pump is swollen, so that's all I could think of.
Will the heater auxiliary valve pump cause the car to run hot?
You need to go to your Mechanic and have a %26quot;Block Test%26quot;. It checks for Exhaust in your cooling system. To answer your specific question.

The Aux coolant pump usually is used for the heating system. It just

boosts the flow to the heater core. No it would not cause your engine to run hot. I betting you may have a small head gasket leak or cracked head. HTH
Will the heater auxiliary valve pump cause the car to run hot?
swollen is bad but not likely what it is but still replace it also should be able to watch the flow of coolant in radiator and feel hoses while its hot or warm and you dont have to have oil in water or water in oil to have a bad head gasket and you can get a radiator pressure test or a compression tester most any parts store many rent them

  • How to change a thermostat on a 1999 alero?

flushed coolant . still overheating, while standing still mostly.... car is cooler on the highway.
How to change a thermostat on a 1999 alero?
    Dude

RTB that means read the book. Get a manual and read it. Also high quality tools (husky or craftsman) are a must. If you want to learn about cars find a shop that will let you, even sweep the floor and get a job in the industry. Always RTB if you don't know!!!
How to change a thermostat on a 1999 alero?
The symptom you describe sounds like your cooling fan is inoperative. You just said it yourself, OVERHEATING WHILE STANDING STILL= no air flow through radiator. During vehicle cruising at highway speeds, there is sufficient airflow circulating through the radiator, which would not require the cooling fan to operate. One way to check this is to turn on the AC, and see if the cooling fan comes on. If not, either the cooling fan motor itself, or wiring to the cooling fan is the cause. Another way to verify cooling fan operation is to disconnect the ECT sensor with the vehicle running, the fan should come on at HIGH speed. If not, the ECT or its associated wiring could be the cause. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Does anyone know how to reset a computer in a Suzuki Aerio 2003?

Changed thermostat and now the car turns on but shuts off after a few minutes like its stalling itself out.
Does anyone know how to reset a computer in a Suzuki Aerio 2003?
To reset the ECU, just disconnect the positive battery terminal and then press the brake pedal a few times to drain any residual charge. Then reconnect the battery terminal. You can also pull the fuse for the ECU, which is usually located in the fuse box located under the hood....
Does anyone know how to reset a computer in a Suzuki Aerio 2003?
normally you need a special OBD2 scan tool. you can disconnect the negative battery cable with the headlamp switch turned on for about 10 minutes. this will erase the computers memory and drain power from the capacitors. just be aware that this will also make you lose all the memory on your radio.
Take it to an auto parts store, most of them have a diagnosis computer that will clear all the codes. They will usually do this for free...good luck
I used to have a car that the transmission would mess up and I would have to reset the computer occasionally. All i had to do was unhook the battery cables and put them back on.
Disconnecting the battery will not clear the code. Suzuki is aware of it, because when I called to make an appointment of the %26quot;chek eng%26quot; light, they knew right away on the phone what the problem was. Told just to stop by anytime and they will clear it

Could my thermostat in my car need to be replaced?

i have a 1997 eldorado and lately the temp gauge is going pass the middle to the first line. it comes back down but only when i start driving for a while. the car is running at 215 degrees and gets up top 235. i know the head gaskets are hell to fix on this car so im trying to see whats the issue. could it be the thermostat needs to be replaced. i bought the car used and don't know when they changed it out last i have owned it for 1 year now.
Could my thermostat in my car need to be replaced?
Could be the thermostat. It may be sticking closed or partially closed, then opening fully when the temperature gets hotter. It's a cheap fix if you do it yourself.

Also, be sure there's sufficient coolant in the system. Gotta check the obvious along with the not so obvious.

Late ignition timing can cause overheating problems.
Could my thermostat in my car need to be replaced?
    if it was the thermostat

then you should be getting no heat out of the vents

i would check the oil, maybe even change it if you havent since you got it

and flush the coolant out, you can replace the thermo if you want, theyre cheap, but i dont think thats the problem

I have no heat in my 2000 ford Taurus. I have flushed the heater core and changed the thermostat.?

Car warms up. Vaccum lines seem to be working. Any other ideas. The air coming out is VERY cold like it is air conditioning air.
I have no heat in my 2000 ford Taurus. I have flushed the heater core and changed the thermostat.?
behind the dash there is a thing called the blendoor, it is a door thet basicly opens and closes on the heater core to either let heat into the vents or block heat from entering your vents, these always brake on fords. yours is stuck closed to the heater core. have this checked.
I have no heat in my 2000 ford Taurus. I have flushed the heater core and changed the thermostat.?
Make sure the a/c is not on, maybe the a/c switch is stuck in the on position
    Feel the heater hoses.

    1) hoses warm, heater cold, probably a broken/not working air door in the heater air box, or control broken.

    2) hoses cold, system air locked, bleed cooling system.

    3) hoses still cold after bleeding cooling system, get your wallet out, head gasket(s).

My car has warm air at idle but not when I am driving?

I have a olds bravada. I had changed leaking gaskets. This has fixed my leak but here is the problem I have heat when it is sitting running but when I drive it I have no heat. I also changed the thermostat about 4 months ago?
My car has warm air at idle but not when I am driving?
Please check the fan for broken fuse, not working, dirty, or weak. Logically, when driving you will get wind from front, and it colling your radiator. While when idle no wind moving to you, even smoke from others will the radiator receive and make it hotter. Turn on the olds bravada, and see is the fan turn on? If its not, use a screwdrive to give a bit hit to it and see happen, if the fan turning then it just stop caused by dirt. The other symphton, replace the fuse or f an. Some scary imagination, is your coolant circulating normally? I'm scare that part of the sealant from the new gasket got jamming the circulation way. Or probably there is an air trapped inside.
My car has warm air at idle but not when I am driving?
Check the radiator when cold - to see if it is full - NOT the overflow tank

Air in the system will reduce circulation considerably when the unit is over idle.

Add only a mix of 50/50 coolant.

also the thermostat was changed as well...the car continues to run hot...the water pump was checked and it is okay...what do you think is the problem..nothing is leaking out of the car...i had the sensors checked...it just sizzles near the motor when the car gets hot...i know i have to put it on the diagnostic machine....but i just want to know your thoughts
I have a 1998 cadillac concurse and the car was running hot..so the heater core was changed(which was busted)?
If the car continues to run hot and NOT lose antifreeze you could look into any blockage in the coolant system, be it a radiator, or a coolant system flush.

The pump should circulate the fluid if there is nothing in the way, your cooling fans should come on if the car is near stop if it overheats as well.

Also check for a radiator cap if it overheats under load
I have a 1998 cadillac concurse and the car was running hot..so the heater core was changed(which was busted)?
For your information no diagnostic machine can do a coolant pressure test, thats what you need to have done. You need to spend the 20 bucks it will cost at a shop to have the pressure test done and have a block test done. If you dont see any noticable leaks, you are for in a big repair bill, either intake or head gaskets. Spend the 20 bucks and have it analyzed by a pro.
You don't need no rip off diagnostic machine for heating problem. Take it to a RADIATOR SHOP and get it checked.
90% chance it's your timing belt.........
there are a couple of things that come to mind. Not sure what the heater care had to do with the engine running hot. You do need to check and see if the radiator is flowing good. Check the temp of the top hose versus the bottom one. Check and see if the top of the radiator is the same as the bottom or I think in this case that both sides of the radiator are the same. I am talking about left and right sides not front and back. If none of this helps you need a pressure test done to see how the head gasket is working.

My '97 Pontiac Grand Prix is leaking the water we put into it from underneath the car. Is it the water pump?

The water is being put in because it was overheating. We changed the thermostat and everything and it got better, but about a month later it started overheating again and now it is leaking water bad from underneath the car. Whatever is leaking is covered by a shield thing. Im not sure what it is, and I dont want to replace it before I know if thats really what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My '97 Pontiac Grand Prix is leaking the water we put into it from underneath the car. Is it the water pump?
If the leak is on the passenger side of the car (near the tire) then it is most likely your water pump. It is driven by the serpentine belt that drives most of the visible components on the passenger side of the engine. (power steering, A/C, Alternator etc)

To check it, you need to look UNDER the water pump, it has a weep hole. If this small (1/8%26quot;) hole is wet, or shows signs of having been leaking (like discoloration or rust) then your waterpump seals or bearings are going. The unit must be replaced. This should also fix your over heating problems.

If the leak is near the back-center of the engine, then it may be a frost plug (also called a freeze plug) these are designed to pop if the enging coolant freezes to prevent damage to the engine block, they can also be opened if the engine over heats. Be careful when replacing this plug, if you drive it INTO the engine, you will have to dismantle the engine to get it out again. On the plus side, you can get rubber plugs that are easy to install and quite inexpensive.

I'd place the water pump as the most likely problem.
My '97 Pontiac Grand Prix is leaking the water we put into it from underneath the car. Is it the water pump?
It could be but try checking the hoses of the radiator, maybe the damage is not as bad as it seems.
Your water pump is bad. My water pump just got replaced because it did the same.
what motor is in the car if its a 3.1 or a 3.4 Daremo is right on the ball there one thing i would add is to check the lower intake gaskets they tend to go alot if its a 3.8 there are 2 little coolant pipes that are sealed with o rings they leak alot too they are right by the drive belt tensioner

    GM tech
It probably is the waater pump. The bad thing is that I believe the water pump is run by the timing, which means it is major engine work. If you are not VERY comfortable doing mechanic work, then I would suggest carrying it to a professional mechanic. It also means a good time to replace timing components.
your are going to take the bottom cover off anyway 5(MIN) i do not think its the bottom radiator hose (lucky)freeze plug, water pump
    Is it raining outside?
COULD BE A BAD HOSE AS WELL
easy answer: If it's a 3.1 or 3.4 lean over the engine and look straight down. You are going to look straight down below the air intlet, lots of plastic tubing there, and straight down behind the powersteering pump. If you see an orange substance there your intake is leaking. $600+. If it's not there look next at the belt. Look for the forward most pulley, it's the a.c. compressor. If it's orange on the top it's the water pump. If neither of those are the case the cylinder head gasket on bank 2, aka the side facing the firewall of the car or back of car. Unfortunatly those are all very costly repairs, the water pump being the least, the head gasket being worst.

I bought my son a 2000 ford focus and while his car sits and idles it start to overheat.?

We changed the thermostat flushed the radiator and checked the oil for a a funny color. it all seems normal.
I bought my son a 2000 ford focus and while his car sits and idles it start to overheat.?
You didn't mention if the cooling fan/s behind the radiator come on when the engine temp begins to overheat. If not, it could be the fan, or the thermostat that controls the fan. If it doesn't come on, try running a direct line wire from the fan to the battery. If the fan comes on then, it's the thermostat for the fan. It's not low on coolant is it? Slight possibility, water pump might be bad. Get a Chilton's or Haynes Service Manual for your Ford, they have a great trouble shooting section, and will give step by step instructions to repair most problems. Good luck with it.
I bought my son a 2000 ford focus and while his car sits and idles it start to overheat.?
sounds like it could be a head gasket...if the car has white smoke comming from the tail pipe it may be a head gasket, try starting the car without the radiator cap off if the radiator fluid pushes out of the radiator then i would think its the head gasket or maybe your rad is blocked somewhere
I've never had a radiator flush do any good, and it wouldn't have helped my friend's 2000 Focus. The radiator was plugged nearly solid, the result of using water from the Phoenix tap for a coolant change. It wasn't hard to diagnose - I pulled the lower hose off the radiator and the upper hose off the thermostat housing, then ran a hose into the upper hose. A tiny trickle came out. I couldn't even blow through the radiator! A new radiator was about $120 aftermarket and was a moderate challenge to put in (it came out through the bottom). Life is good.
Check your fluids again. Look at the oil and make sure it's not ( milky) looking. Also look at tail pipe and make sure you see no white smoke coming out, if so it could be a blown head. Another indicator of a blown head can be a sweet smell coming from the car, sounds strange but let's hope none of these things is a problem.
Yea check the fan, those wires come disconnected a lot. Other wise check for blocks in the cooling system. lastly look for any odd color smoke coming out of the tail pipe. White smoke is not good, means a cracked block. If your oil looks like a milkshake then that real bad. means water got in the oil

Why is my car's coolant overflow boiling over?

I recently had the thermostat changed on my '92 Plymouth Acclaim (King of the Road!) and my coolant keeps boiling out and overflowing even though my temp gauge is going nowhere near the hot end anymore. What are the possible problems that I have?
Why is my car's coolant overflow boiling over?
Both of these previous answers are correct. Either you have a faulty radiator cap, or they put in the wrong thermostat. Also you have to take into consideration if they actually RESEALED the thermostat housing. That is to say they put a gasket in there and ALSO PUT GASKET SEALER/MAKER on there. Cooling systems will eat through those paper gaskets that are provided w/the thermostats within a matter of hours. (i.e.-the 2.2, 1998 Cavalier I had to reseal the water pump a second time because it ate the paper gasket. Resealed w/silver high temp RTV gaket maker, and it was good as new.) So take it back to the shop, ask them to PRESSURE TEST the engine. If they do not have a pressure tester, then take it to a shop that does and then never go back to the original shop. Any mechanic worth his dollar will have a cooling system pressure tester.

    Good Luck

Why is my car's coolant overflow boiling over?
Take it back to the place that did your thermostat, they may have put in the wrong temp stat. Or you may have some clogs in your cooling systems ports. The coolant should circulate in the system if it backs up there is something wrong, just like the plumbing in your house.
it might be the radiator cap not holding the pressure.

My car is driving me into the poor house!!!!?

I have tried everything but my car keeps overheating! I have had the thermostat changed, replaced the radiator, and got a new water pump all to no avail. Now I am being told that it is probably the heater core and that is going to cost about $600. Does that sound about right or should I just take a sledgehammer to my car and be done with it?
My car is driving me into the poor house!!!!?
    Get a second opinion.
My car is driving me into the poor house!!!!?
sounds to me like your mechanic might be taking you for a ride. try a second opinion. and the cost of replacing your heater core can vary...what kind of car is it? a good mechanic should be able to find the problem with your car overheating...i might be able to tell you but i need more details. i'd try a different mechanic maybe.
A bad head gasket will also cause an over heating problem...
SELL the problematic car! Maintain the house instead.
Sounds to me you've got a faultive cylinder head....used to have that same problem in the past...might be also as well the tubing leaking?

But instead of taking a sledgehammer, I would rather try to replace the car...
bad head gasket cracked head or cracked engine block or warped one of the 2 have it checked out
you could bypass the heater core altogether and get a second opionif you bypass the heater core you can drive it till winter hits and if it is the heater core leaking water under your car or in the floor board!!
Another possible answer that could cause the problem- bad head gasket. Please get a second opinion from a different auto repair technician.

There is not much left to replace with all you have done so far. I think your best bet is to get a different opinion.

    Good Luck.
Hmmm.-Sounds like your car would make a good planter for the side yard of your home. Better buy a new one while you're still sane enough to decide whether geraniums or petunias look better in the old one!
hope you already 've checked the engine oil level....coz one of the jobs for oil is the cooling of engine as well.............

    so goodluck
it could be cracked head, block, warped head or block, heater core, fan not working properly, something blocing the airflow like grass over the air conditioner condenser(exaple) its very hard to tell without seeing the car or knowing what it is , also ive had it happen to me befor ive bought parts that werent good ive put water pumps on that had bearings out , starters that lasted about a weak (thanks Autozone) but its very hard without actually seeing it
my sister's 92 honda civic was overheating for 3 weeks on and off and we just figure out the problem, there were 2 hoses that had cracks in them causing little leaks that would overheat the car. $35 for check up and $40 for 2 hoses replaced.
is the passenger side floor carpet wet?..do u see smoke comin from the vents? do u get a headache when u drive ur car ? heater core could be shot...check oil too and coolant temperture senor

  • I got a head job done on my car and now the car is overheating beyong 3/4?

My mechanic changed the thermostat and it is still over heating. I am also leaking oil. it seems that there is a delay on the thermostat. Please help me. my car is dogde intrepid.

Check to see if your water pump is pumping and also make sure your radiator isn't stopped up.

Heater Gauge in my 91 Acura Legend says engine overheating but Engine is cool! changed Thermostat & Water Hose?

The heater gauge says the engine is way hot but I can touch the engine with my hands. The upper water hose busted and replaced it. Lower Water hose doesn't heat up at all. Replaced thermostat. Still no change also the car heater only works randomly. Radiator is bubbling hot, when I open the cap the Antifreeze bubbles and overflows. Stil the engine is at operating temperature not overheating. What could be my problem? do I have a blown head gasket? or do I have a radiator problem? please help!
Heater Gauge in my 91 Acura Legend says engine overheating but Engine is cool! changed Thermostat %26amp; Water Hose?
It is definitely the water pump.

At the first part of the question, I thought of the temp. sending unit, but after I read the radiator is bubbling hot but the upper hose busting and the lower hose not getting hot, that tells me that there is no coolant circulating although the thermostat opens.

Replace the water pump before you do cause a head gasket leak. You will overheat the engine and possibly warp the heads.

    REPLACE THE WATER PUMP!
Heater Gauge in my 91 Acura Legend says engine overheating but Engine is cool! changed Thermostat %26amp; Water Hose?
You probably have a dead water pump.
Sorry Bud, Bubbling antifreeze should be head gasket. Does the exhaust smell sweet and or white smoke? The head gasket will go out when you have an over heat situation like the rad hose busting on you.

Why do I have no heat it my 200sx?

I have recently changed my thermostat due to car overheating and once changed car ran fine. A few weeks later, a heater hose cracked and eventually split. After fixing the hose, I had no heat for a day then the heat started to work and then back to no heat again. Please HELP!!!
Why do I have no heat it my 200sx?
is the radiator full? i know it's probably a bad question but check anyway. next is the thermostat installed properly? do you smell antifreeze when heats on? if so check for leaks on pass. side ie: the heatercore. but i would flush system if all leaks are repaired sometimes after opening the cooling system for repair scale and deposits can clog lines and reduce efficiency try that good luck
Why do I have no heat it my 200sx?
    air lock in the system
Yea sounds like air in the line check on your themostat housing there should be a bleeder screw at the top to let out the air with your car runing of course release it and tighten back up when coolant starts to leaks out. Air in the line causes hot spots like that among other things. Also do you get no heat at all, or do you get only windshielf defrost, if thats the case it could also be a vacuum or motor problem in your heater exchange.Longs your not over heating than it sounds like the themostat was installed correctly and if its the heater core you passanger floor would be wet. Good Luck
Sounds like there is an air lock in the coolant system. Try removing the top hose, push a garden hose in it and turn on the water.

    Ja.
Sounds like an airlock in the system.

Try parking it up a steep hill or on some ramps. Start the engine and rev it to about 2000rpm,keep an eye on the water level and add some if it drops. When theres no more air it won't take any more water and everything is fine.

It may take a while but it works.

After changing a water pump the car runs and idles rough?

I have an 86 camaro iroc z with the 305 tpi. it has been sitting for a long time and the thermostat stuck shut.i replaced that and it got things flowing and then discovered the water pump leaking from the weep hole.at this point the car still ran fine.after changing the water pump is when it started running rough.i checked all the vacum lines and they were good and made sure it was getting a good ground.it acts like it is a timing issue.i still need to flush the system good and i think i may have an air pocket or two in the system.would this possibly affect the knock sensor and cause it to be retarding the timing.just seems weird that it ran fine before the water pump and bad immediately after replacing it
After changing a water pump the car runs and idles rough?
Mileage %26amp; How Long is a %26quot;Long Time?%26quot; If Long Time means a Year or more you may need to Rebuild the Carburetor, Change the Fuel Filters [Engine %26amp; Tank Fuel Pick-up] and check the Tank for sediment, Etc.
After changing a water pump the car runs and idles rough?
An air pocket could cause your trouble and since the car has been sitting it is a good idea to check the timing, change the oil, and check the spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor.
What you might try is changing the plugs and go to a set of 9MM wires, and get a new distributor cap and rotor but get the brass set up for the cap and rotor. But while your changing the plugs do a compression test on all cylinders, this way you'll know what the compression is for each of them. But when you changed out the water pump you might of got a air bubble in the cooling system that needs to be bleed out so it won't over heat but when you do this turn on your heater to high so the cooling system circulates. And then go to a pharmacy and get 2 bottles of rubbing alcohol of the 92% and go to a parts store and get 2 bottles of gas treatment and then go get some real gas from a chevron station because of the techron that is in the gas but put the bottles in when you fill it up so it mixes with the gas.It will treat the whole system and the combustion chambers.

My 93 mirage overheats, i just changed the thermostat, and it doesnt leak nowhere, can it be the radiator clogg?

when the car is at normal op-temp the hoses just feel like high pressure air is in them. How do I check the radiator for any cloggs?
My 93 mirage overheats, i just changed the thermostat, and it doesnt leak nowhere, can it be the radiator clogg?
You need to make sure that you have removed all the air from the system by bleeding it. I just start the car and pour the coolant in with it running. Do this until the coolant will no longer drop in the radiator. If this doesnt help start looking for engine oil in the radiator or coolant in the oil, it could be a blown head gasket.
My 93 mirage overheats, i just changed the thermostat, and it doesnt leak nowhere, can it be the radiator clogg?
Sounds like you have air in the cooling system.

If you don't have a bleeder valve for the cooling system, just remove the radiator cap, start the car and keep refilling the coolant, you should see the water circulating, if not, the thermostat is in backwards.

  • Why does my car temp gauge jump to the halfway point as soon as I start it?

I have a 2005 hyundai elantra. When I cold start it, the temp gauge jumps to the optimal temp on the temp gauge.(the halfway point) It didn't do this until I changed the thermostat.
Why does my car temp gauge jump to the halfway point as soon as I start it?
you put your thermostat in backwards
Why does my car temp gauge jump to the halfway point as soon as I start it?
Water temp.gauge is fluctuating/malfunction due to loose connection. water temp.gauge taking signal from water temp.sensor (single pin)this sensor is made of thermistor and the output resistance is varying if water temp.is change,,so if there is corrosion or loose connection in the terminal the resistance output is high or if short to ground your meter guage showing up..make sure the sensor terminal is free of corrosion %26amp; no loose connection also the engine ground %26amp; body ground,.

Where is the thermostat housing on a 1987 Pontiac Grand Am 4 cylinder?

I have an 87 Grand Am with the 4 cylinder engine and well over 200k miles. It severely overheats when idling, but the water pump is not seized, the fan motor seems to be working and it's not losing enough coolant to be a head gasket, etc. My guess is a stuck thermostat, so I want to try changing it and the radiator cap (just to be safe) before totally giving up on the car, which is just used as a spare for our 2 much newer vehicles and isn't worth putting very much money into. If it's anything very serious I'm just going to get rid of the car. Maybe I'm just blind, but I can't seem to locate the thermostat housing on the engine. If anyone knows exactly where it is I would really appreciate the help.
Where is the thermostat housing on a 1987 Pontiac Grand Am 4 cylinder?
If you have the 2.2, the thermostat is located on the front of the engine right behind the water pump.

If you have the 2.3 or 2.4, the thermostat is located on the back of the engine. There is a tube that runs under the oil pan and goes up under the water pump and the thermostat is located where that tube hooks into the water pump.
Where is the thermostat housing on a 1987 Pontiac Grand Am 4 cylinder?
follow the big hose coming from the top of the raidaitor to the other end.
Follow the upper rad hose to where it meets the engine, that should be the housing for thermostat.

    Thermostat for my car?! Urgent!?

I was driving to my job and my car over heat it! I took it to the mechanic and they told me that I need it a thermostat... they told me it was expensive. but I cant find it! please help with a website who sells them and tell me what kind of thermostat I need...

Is each time i try to drive it gets overheat it...I already changed the radiator too...

    Thanks.
    Thermostat for my car?! Urgent!?
Thermostats are cheap but labor isn't. It is easy to fix with minimal tools, Go to the auto Parts store and have them look up your car part and get some gasket sealer. Ask for the type that fails in the open position.

Follow the top radiator hose down to engine and the thermostat is under the hose fitting, 2 bolts and it's off. It can be done with a screwdriver and crescent wrench but a ratchet and socket ( 3/8, 7/16, 12mm or 13mm)is better. Scrape off all of the old gasket.

    Good luck.
    Thermostat for my car?! Urgent!?
DO you really thnk all cars are the SAME?!?!?! What kind of car is this. Year, make, model, engine size, country of origin??? MORE INFO NEEDED. You might just need a cooling fan switch. This is the most common cause of over-heating, as well as debris between the radiator and the A/C condenser. Also, you must use the right type of coolant. Please, don't keep it a secret!!! What kind of car is this?!?!?!
Auto Zone, Advance Auto, O'Riley's are good stores with websites. Just put in the info for your vehicle and it will give you pictures and prices for the area you live in. You'll have to enter your zip code too.

Thermostats aren't expensive. The labor might be depending on how many other parts they would have to remove to get to it. If the mechanic that changed your radiator is the one saying you need a new thermo, then I would take it to someone else to work on since he must have changed out your radiator when the problem was the thermo.

What could be the reason my car keeps overheating?

Although my car is due for an oil change it has plenty of oil in it, therefore I don't think that is the reason for my car overheating. After driving a few blocks my car alerts me that my engine is overheating, turn off engine. It overheats faster when I'm running the heater and revving the engine. I have coolant and water in my car. Could it be my thermostat or a more serious matter? I promise to take better care of my baby if she comes back from this.
What could be the reason my car keeps overheating?
    probably a stuck thermostat
What could be the reason my car keeps overheating?
You need to check for a few things.

Does your heat work? If you have heat in the interior of your car, coolant is circulating and your water pump is turning. I find it funny that you said it overheats faster when you have the heater on. Usually the heater core will provide a decent amount of cooling when the fan is on high and the coolant is flowing through it.

If there is no heat, you either have an airlock somewhere or your water pump is not turning.

If there is heat, it is most likely a thermostat.

There is no way to explain how to check for this, because you did not mention your make and model of vehicle, but with that information troubleshooting should be fairly easy.
Is seems that the coolant is not getting into the engine. Is the radiator hose cracked or does it have a hole in it? Is the coolant leaking? Leave the car parked on pavement for a little while then move it. Is there any green fluid on the ground? If so, you have a leak.

Or you can have someone look underneath your car, if you go to Midas, they may not even charge you if it's minor, and see what it is.

My coolant kept leaking because the clamp was loose. Midas put it back on for me at no charge.

Why my car take along time to reach normal operating temperature I could drive for a long time and the temp?

gauge wouldnt even reach the M on Norm. I notice on my other cars the gauge hand will go to the middle real quick. what could be the problem I have a 1989 ford thunderbird 3.8 v6. I just change the thermostat 2 days ago and radiator about two weeks ago
Why my car take along time to reach normal operating temperature I could drive for a long time and the temp?
If you just changed the thermostat a few days ago you could still have air in the system and need to bleed it out , if you dont you could blow up your engine by over heating it. There should be a bleed valve by the thermostat housing. Your right most fords run between the R and M on the gauge.
Why my car take along time to reach normal operating temperature I could drive for a long time and the temp?
Quality thermostat and be sure air is all bled from system
what temperature thermostat did you put in? it should be at least a 195 degree.
maybe it is heating up to operating temp and the gauge is just whack. do you get warm air from the heater?

  • What should i set my diablosport predator fan settings too if i'm using the stock thermostat?

I have a 06 charger rt, and i'm waiting for my diablosport to come it. The diablo is set up for a 180 degree thermostat, the stock thermostat on my car is 203. What serttings should i set the fans at on the diablo unit i get the 180 thermostat? Also does it make a big difference using the 180tsat with the diablo considering i can change the fans settings on the diablo?
What should i set my diablosport predator fan settings too if i'm using the stock thermostat?
it will make a small difference in the way it runs ,and it will need to get a little hotter to run a little better,id set it to 180-190,but the problem will be the thermostat it will kick out at 180 most of the time, and you can run a 195 in it if you want to,but if you go with the 180 keep the setting higher than 180,that way it wont cool it off to much,if it does you,ll get a check engine light with it all the time, good luck.
What should i set my diablosport predator fan settings too if i'm using the stock thermostat?
Unless you plan to change your tstat,I would leave the setting alone. The newer engines, like the one in your car run better @ the higher operating temps. The Diablo is an excellent choice for a hand held tuner.I have a Diablo tune in my Ford F-150 and I love it.
you should check out lxforums.com. It is the best forums for your car and a lot of people have got diablos that they have been messing with

Our car keeps overheating, need help?

We have a 1984 cadilac seville. And it's been overheating. At times there will be loads of anti-freeze coming out from under the car. We changed the thermostat and the radiator cap. What else could be the problem? It doesn't %26quot;smoke%26quot; or put off steam when overheating.
Our car keeps overheating, need help?
There are a million reason why a car would be doing this, there could be a leak in the radiator's lower hose, the radiater seal could be rusted out, you could have run a curb and scrapped the radiater breaking one of the channels, if it comes out fast like this its probably the hose but I have seen bad radiator seals leak very fast. Also you could have a hole in one of your expansion plugs, either way your car might not be smoking because it empties coolent faster then it takes for the car to get hot enough to make steam. Take yoru car to a shop most liekly it isn't anything too serious unless you try to run the car while its overheating this will cause the car to permanently seize.
Our car keeps overheating, need help?
Heater Core, if its flowing anywhere out of your car and its not steaming from your engine, then its more than likely your heater core.
Are you sure the thermostat is in correctly?

It can be put in backwards - and will cause this problem.

Next take it out - and open the radiator cap

Start the car and look to see if the antifreeze is flowing around - if not you have a clogged radiator.

Also check the water pump which may have broken bent fins, not pushing the water correctly.
I'd first check that the water pump is working properly. Next, I'd check if the thermostat was put in correctly. Failing that I'd head for a dealership to get them to check the system.

How long since you did a coolant flush and fill?

My car temp gauge goes hot up and down, why ?

i have a 1999 honda civic dx coupe, i recently had timing-belt changed with water pump, also changed thermostat. the radiator is fine, no leaks, the fan works- it turns on. i drive the car and the temp gauge goes up to high/red hot, dont know why?
My car temp gauge goes hot up and down, why ?
flush the radiator to get air out of the lines then change thermostat to a higher temp thermostat 185-195 degree ask the auto parts if they make 1 for your vehicle and do a manual jump of the fan to make sure it works..........if you ran it hot before you changed all of those parts then i would say head gasket ....you didn't mention water in the oil........autozone.com has an online manual with a troubleshooting section to help you figure it out
My car temp gauge goes hot up and down, why ?
Check coolant and oil levels. Make sure they are at the levels and color they are supposed to be at. You probably blew a headgasket. You could try a block sealer to possibly get more life out of it. but the real fix would be to have the engine rebuilt.
a blown head gasket can cause the problem you describe...
Given the work that you just did (I assume it didn't do this prior to the work?) you probably have an air pocket in the cooling system. Possibly a faulty thermostat.
HEAD gasket....replace the head gasket dont use the head gasket repair...it is dangerous.

  • What are some of the effects of running the car -without- the Thermostat?

Im Googling this as well.. but i wanted Human input too.

Update: Sealers are in the car, im about to check on the new head now (I may get one machined fromEBay.) IM THE MEANTIEM, i need to get to Work, and this car is what i got.

The Thermostat is dead.. i didnt see any change when i boiled it. Glad new ones are cheap. Im wondering what will happen if i run the car WITHOUT one.. that means coolant is ALWAYS circulating through the WHOLE Engine, but it may take like an %26quot;Hour%26quot; to warm up?

Also.. i need to add Antifreeze soon. I had 100% water in again for the Sealers.. ive heard they work -best- when %26quot;Left in,%26quot; and also that it gums up when Antifreeze is introduced. Is this true?

Again..; tghansk for the input.. car is getting better.. and i respect all pinions.

    Thanks

What are some of the effects of running the car -without- the Thermostat?
without the thermostat ? bad gas mileage and no heat in the car for winter. a motor has to be so hot to burn the gas off the valves and when you remove it, it cools the valves too much then your burning raw gas.
What are some of the effects of running the car -without- the Thermostat?
you got it right it jus takes longer for the engine to warm up might make the heater longer to make warm air. i run my 97 nissan without one because if it rust shut or malfunctions then i could be stuck on the side of the highway with an over heating truck of worse blown motor warped head etc

nope your mistaken: the thermostat opens when the engine gets to operating temp. there are different temp thermostats depending on when you want it to open to allow the coolant to flow through the engine if there is no thermostat then the coolant flows through the engine wether its cold or hot
    you are mistaken

The thermostat opens when it engine gets hot, that's what circulates the coolant through the radiator and cools the engine. No thermostat = no cooling = BAD. The coolant will not circulate it the thermostat valve is closed.

How do you intend to run without a thermostat anyways? It's an integral part of the cooling system - you have to connect though it to get the coolant to circulate. To my knowledge there isn't even a way to bypass this.

Also, sealers are meant to be a temporary fix...what are you fixing...radiator?? Best to replace it - you'll need to eventually anyways.

Same thing with the 100% water - the effect of coolant is to keep it from freezing but also to raise the boiling point to allow it to absorb more heat from the engine. 100% water will cause the engine to overheat faster. You need a 50/50 mix.
Engines run better when hot, so leaving the thermostat out will constantly circulate the coolant which in turn will take longer to warm up. Other than this there should be no problem unless the vehicle depends on the thermostat to seal the joint. Not recommended long term but perfectly safe short term.
with out the thermostat in place your car will perform poorly and not heat up Corly and your Obed will act up and the treadle advancement on timing will also be affected along with the cold and warm injection SYSTEM installed in your car so i might sagest that you replace the thermostat be for you replace the head ADO save your SLF about 500 dollars and make it to and from work more Faisal and after you have the thermostat installed coracle and in the right way may i also sagest that you mix your coolant at a 50 50 blend for this will give you the freeze protection you need and the bolling point will also in cress so you should be good to go if you ha vent a broken head or gasket but im not sure what your first com plant was hope this has been help full and good luck with your problem
you are going to buy a 200-400$ replacement head and you don't think you need a 10$ thermostat who are you mr crabbs son?!? running a thermostat maintains a normal running temperature, no thermostat? what is going to stop your car from boiling over, get out of my way i got to get some air running through my radiator before i overheat, you think thermostats where made to take out since your friend says youdon'tt need that!?! don't run a thermostat and when you warp your brand new head you think they are going to warranty it w/ no thermostat?!? spend the ten bucks get a thermostat and run coolant in your radiator it worth the headaches and cost w/out it!!!
First of all take out the fresh water. It will do more harm to your engine if left in.

Also It will not take an hour for your engine to warm up without a thermostat, but will take longer than normal.

Why have you got sealers in your system, is this because you also have leaks. It sounds a bit mixed up. Why do you need a skimmed head.? You need to add more detail

Buy your new thermostat straight away and fit it.. Drain off the system completely and refill with the correct mix of antifreeze. Let it tick over for five minutes and then check the level again and top up if necessary.

If you do have leaks then fix them first, or if your head gasket has blown or warped the head then these have to be fixed. Work or no work, you will have to make other arrangements.

A little more detail will help us give you a better answer.

I changed my water pump thermostat and all my rad hoses but the car still runs over 200 degrees?

its a 95 buick riviera sc with a series 1 motor
I changed my water pump thermostat and all my rad hoses but the car still runs over 200 degrees?
That car has a 195 thermostat and is suppose to run about 210 degrees.

If it is running hot, 14 years is pretty old for a radiator. It could be mostly clogged.
I changed my water pump thermostat and all my rad hoses but the car still runs over 200 degrees?
I'd look into getting a new radiator.
    headgasket
what temp thermostat did you put in it .you could have a 220 thermostat if so its not gonna open till the engine gets that hot wich is no problem...... how hot dos it get???????
you might have to flush out the cooling system and check the radiator cap. also make sure it,s circulating good in the radiator. your car should take the same temperature thermostat as my oldsmobile, 195 degree is what it takes. if you put too hight of 1 in then it,s going to get too hot before it opens.
well where to start....does the electric engine fan work? whats the condition of the radiator? When the engine is hot, do you have heat thru the ventsin the cab? What temp thermostat did you use? i believe in those cars its a 180 thermostat. Those things need to be checked.

How to change the thermostat on a 2000 Chevy Malibu.?

How do you change the thermostat on a 2000 Chevy Malibu? I see the top bolt and can feel the bottom bolt to take off the one peice. (sorry, don't know much bout cars) How do you get to the bottom bolt?
How to change the thermostat on a 2000 Chevy Malibu.?
I have done many of these. The service manual will tell you to remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Please don't do this, you'll just be wasting your time. I always use a 13mm open end wrench and reach under and around the crossover pipe with my right hand with the wrench and my left hand i put in between the exhaust crossover pipe and the thermostat housing(the one piece you are referring to).The left hand helps to position the end of the wrench onto the bolt and holds it on while turning it. It will take a little while to remove the bolt, as there is not much room for the wrench to move, but it works. You also may have to keep flipping the wrench over to get it back on the bolt in the limited space.
How to change the thermostat on a 2000 Chevy Malibu.?
go to a parts store and ask them for a book on your year of car. and it will give you step by step instructions on how Better than guessing and braking something change the thermostat
if you remove the top radiator hose it should be easier

How do you change the thermostat on a 96 Olds Cutlass Cierra?

I'm a little new at car repairs so your help would be appreciated.

    It's a 3.1.
How do you change the thermostat on a 96 Olds Cutlass Cierra?
That thermostat is at the base of the lower intake manifold. Pretty challenging to access.

You can follow the pipe from the upper radiator hose down to the base of the manifold, The thermostat is behind where it bolts to the manifold.

All you should have to remove is the air inlet duct. to access the housing.
How do you change the thermostat on a 96 Olds Cutlass Cierra?
Investment in a repair manual for your vehicle could save you lots in the long run....such as if you do this job wrong and overheat your engine.....have major leaks....etc. The manual gives pictures, tools you need and expert advise, here you do not know whether the advise is from a professional mechanic or a 16 year old kid.

Toyota Paseo 94 vibrations when you mush the gas what could it be?

Have done tune up plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, put in new clutch, oil just changed tonight, catylic converter changed tonight, water pump changed, thermostat changed, air filter changed, and oxygen sensored changed. The car has about 156,000 miles on it. It sounds as if something is loose but don't know what it could be.

  • What would be the first common signs of a incorrectly installed thermostat on a 1991 jeep cherokee inline 6?

i just changed my thermostat on my 91 jeep cherokee inline 6 about 1 week ago. and ive noticed my car has run at around 150 -180degrees which is kind of colder than usual. around 1/4th the way up on my gauge sometimes... is this ok? or could the tstat been installed wrong?
What would be the first common signs of a incorrectly installed thermostat on a 1991 jeep cherokee inline 6?
the thermostat opens as its heated by the coolant. thus allowing hot coolant to pass back to the radiator to be cooled off. and once the engine has filled with colder coolant, the thermostat will cool off as well and close again. until the coolant in the motor gets too hot again and the thermostat opens again, etc, ect...

the way you can tell your theremostat is working is the engine will get hotter and hotter, and then will go down again a little, each time the thermostat is heated to the point that it opens up and allows the hot coolant to escape. just watch the guage carefully and if you can see the needle moving back and forth and the engine getting cooler, hotter, cooler, hotter, you'll see you have a working cooling system

the temp difference is normal and very likely you have a lower temp thermostat. lower temp thermostats open up at lower temperatures. for some people it's a personal preference what temp they want their vehicle to run at.

but it's also very common here in canada to put a low-temp thermostat in during winter. because it doesn't take as long to heat the fluid to 160 instead of 180, allowing hot coolant from the engine to get to the heater core much faster and warm the inside of the car.
What would be the first common signs of a incorrectly installed thermostat on a 1991 jeep cherokee inline 6?
Overheating or not getting warm at all, it depends.

It's possible that you vehicle was just running warmer than normal before too. Maybe with aa new thermostat it's running where it should, check owners manual.
If it were installed incorrectly it would over heat.

If it's running too cool you may have an incorrect one that's opening too soon
Maybe you put too cool of a stat in. Recheck what was supposed to be installed.

Could be normal tho, so keep an eye on your MPG.
sounds like you installed a lower temp thermostat then was in it cause if you have run it for a week and it hasn't over heated or leaked it is probably installed correctly

How do you change a thermostat in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix?

I haven't looked under the hood of my step daughters car but her boyfriend couldn't get to it. Her boss tried and couldn't get to it. Anyone have any suggestions for when I take a look? Apparently it's in a location that you can't get to which I find hard to believe. It has to be a way to get to it to change it. What are they doing wrong and what do I do right?
How do you change a thermostat in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix?
    I feel your pain.

Follow the upper hose. you should see the wires from the temp sensor protruding from the thermostat housing.

The housing is usually mounted with two bolts.

It is a tight squeeze. remove the mass air hoses if needed for maneuvering. Mine I had to remove a heat deflector of the exhaust manifold for better access.

    Drain coolant

Remove the upper hose at the thermostat housing.

The bolt size should be a metric 13mm.

I bought a set of box wrenches with an elbow and ratchet on the end. Expensive but worth it. They are cheap at Lowe's. remember the elbow is important.

I had only 2 degrees movement and took maybe 10min for removal but it was worth not having to remove more compo nets for maneuvering.

Remove old thermostat and gasket. install new one. use appropriate RTV sealant on the housing matting surfaces. tighten

Put everything back in place. pour in coolant. and your done.
How do you change a thermostat in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix?
I figured out the best way. I told her to take it to the repair shop, have them change it and I'd pay for it. lol

well their is only 2 spots it could be all you can do is follow the hoses and you will find it and yes their is a way to do it you should be able to get to it from the top
i own a repair shop, and all you need to do is follow the top radiator hose down to the engine,,some of these though,, are in under the air plenum,,i believe that's why there a little hard to get off,you might have to remove that before you can get it out,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s..,,have a nice x-mas.
Remove top radiator hose Take off the goose neck. Theres the thermoustate, pull it out, slip in new one, bolt gasket and gooseneck back on.Then replace top radiator hose.
You need a slimline 13mm racheting box end wrench, its a pain and takes a bit of skill but thats all you need. its under the throttle body, you don't have to take anything off except the air duct. make sure the cars cold and just dig down in there with the wrench usually its easiest to reach around the back of the motor, by the brake booster, get the top bolt all the way out and loosen the bottom one, the hole is slotted but you have to get it out almost all the way out to clear the thermostat itself, good luck
You must have the 3.1 Liter engine in this vehicle, upper radiator hose connects to this aluminum neck the goes to LR corner of engine. You are going to have to take off the throttle body, where the throttle cables are connected and after you remove this you can see 1 of the bolts from the top, just loosen the top bolt a couple of turns with a open ended wrench it notched out and doesn't have to be taken out all the way. the bottom one is kind of hard but you can just fit a socket with a extention under the exhause pipe to remove this bolt, this one has to come all the way out. then this aluminum radiator neck should slide out of there. Should be 2-- 13mm bolts holding this on.

Acura Integra question. Car THermostat bad?

I have a 90 acura integra. 2 days ago, I was driving on the freeway and there was bumper to bumper traffic, when i started to notice that the temp needle was going up. It went up to almost where the H is. So, I had to get off the freeway. Once i got off the freeway and was driving on the streets, the temp needle went back down, to its normal position. I checked the reserve tank and it was good. I changed the hoses and water pump like 2 yrs ago. What can be the problem? any help?

the fan is working allright. my car has 250,000 miles. what is the head gasket? what do you replace? how much am i expecting the cost will be?
Acura Integra question. Car THermostat bad?
Checking the coolant tank on a vehicle that old means nothing.

You MUST check the radiator, (when cold) to see if it is full.

If the vehicle cooled down when moving again - chances are the stat is O.K.

Check the electric fan to see if it is operating when the temp is 195 or above. There MUST be air moving through the radiator at slow speeds which requires the fan. At highway speeds - air is forced through the radiator without the fan.

It must be clean, (if it is dirty - the contamination will cause some restriction to proper cooling), If it is dirty then you are too late to change it - it must be flushed, cleaned, flushed and a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and distilled or de-mineralized water - NEVER TAP WATER.
Acura Integra question. Car THermostat bad?
ya just check the thermostat..and make sure ur cooliong fan is putting out enough air cuz just because its spinning doesn't mean its moving enough air
An easy way to check the thermostat is to let the engine warm up so that it gets hot enough that the thermostat should open and coolant to start flowing. Feel your radiator hoses on both sides of the thermostat - if one is cooler than the other, it's a good indication that the thermostat is not opening. If they are both hot, then it's a safe bet that coolant is flowing freely. From there, it's a matter of testing the water pump, and things like that are best done by a professional shop.
what ur describing is normal........shouldn't go so high but its normal for cars to overheat in standing traffic...

sounds like u need to have ur cooling system flushed and refill it with proper mix of fresh water/anti-freeze....

u can do this all ureself for under 20 bucks...go to any parts store and ask them what u need...u will need a flush and a flush kit and new anti-freeze....

** anti-freeze NOT only keeps car from freezing but also keeps car for overheating...
If it was very hot out and you had your AC on, it is almost expected.

When the engine is cold, take off the radiator check and check your coolant level. If it is low, than you have a leak, external or internal, and it needs to be checked out.

It is not the thermostat, if anyone says that. If it was the thermostat, you wouldn't even have gotten as far as the highway without going hot and boiling over.

My guess is low on coolant from a small leak, somewhere.
you should have changed the thermostat when you did the water pump. But it sounds like the radiator is bad seeing as the fans are working correctly. It will cost you $80-$125 for the part and is easy enough to replace yourself.

1997 Jetta Overheating, Car overheats right away when driving.?

I noticed that the top of the engine gets hot and the top radiator hose gets hot but about 3 inches from the radiator the hose is COLD, the radiator is COLD and all of the lower hoses to the water pump. Wanted to change the thermostat but found out it isn't so easy in this Jetta, it is buried under the Alternator and Power steering. Does anyone know does this sound like a Waterpump that has gone out. I don't see any coolant leaking and the belt is tight not squeeking. Do hear a rattle somewhere upfront. THe car starts up fine and runs good. I haven't tried to drive it though because it overheats right away. The car original overheated added water to get home. Drove it the next day about 15 miles started to overheat again. Had the radiator flushed at an oil and lube place. After the flush car overheated as soon as I pulled out of the oil change place.
1997 Jetta Overheating, Car overheats right away when driving.?
The T-Stat is not opening to let the coolant pass through to the entire engine. Thats why your getting hot and cold hoses.

    replace the t-stat

    good luck
1997 Jetta Overheating, Car overheats right away when driving.?
Thermostat, most likely. if your hose is hot except at the radiator then that would be the place to start. the cooling systems are pretty simple on most cars. I change my fluid and thermostat once a year. If you have a good mechanic do your work they should replace the thermostat when they flush the coolant. most quick lube places do not. if the thermostat is not opening the water will not be able to get cool.
    Bad thermostat
It really sounds like you've got a thermastat stuck in the closed postion. Do you know if when the lube guys changed the fluid in your radiator, if there was any oil in there? And is there any water deposits in your oil? If so, you've blown a head gasket. At any case, I'd take it to an auto repair shop to at least have it checked out. Normally it really doesn't cost to much for them to diagnos the problem. And if you let them work on that's usally free.
does the heater work??? if no could be air lock in system when bleeding heater valves must be up to hot position so all system can be air free, is the water level staying same or going down??? is the oil white??? could be head.

when engine gets warm thermostat should open then water should flow through to header tank?????
I suspect an air lock in your top hose. Try squeezing it with the engine running and see whether you get air released into the the header tank. the header tank level will drop as you expell the air.
    Thermostat !!

I just sold my car as is they paid cash and already have the title and signed a paper stating they knew they were buying the car as is reguardless of condition and i took it to a mech. to have the thermostat changed and he discovered the radiator was busted. Am i obligated to tell them? or is the sale final since they already gave me the money and signed the paper stating they knew the car was as is no matter the condition of the car?
I just sold my car as is they paid cash and already have the title?
If you found out it was bad after you sold them the car, then no you do not have to tell them. But it would make you look good to tell them, but you do not have to pay for it as thy now own the car.
I just sold my car as is they paid cash and already have the title?
you dont have to tell them. but just remember, karma is a ******
Why were you repairing a car you sold ?

If you told them it just needed a thermostat and you would get that fixed and it needed more, the moral thing to do is tell them and allow them to back out if they want.

a matter of minutes it seems. when it got to the red line yesterday, i popped the hood and usually when a car overheat smoke comes out. And when i open my head there is no smoke or coolant overflow. my car doesnt have any leaks. i did notice when i checked the oil that there was a very small amount of smoke from the engine, so the engine was hot. Not sure what else to do. What could it be??? I have no white smoke from pipe, the oil is fine, coolant color is normal. fans are working???
I have a 1994 honda civic. I changed my therostat, and radiator. My car's thermostat gauge goes straight up in?
2 thing you didn't mention, the water pump gone bad or/coolant temperature sensor not working. Both things happen.

Replace the water pump. Do the timing belt at the same time if it hasn't been replaced yet.
check this when the car is cold turn on the key , is the temp Gage showing cold or does it show alot of temp possible the sensor shifted and you did not over temp at all ,, this just happened to me .

How do I change the heater core on a '95 chevy caprice?

I have no heat in the car. I changed the thermostat then flushed the heater core then flushed radiator. I put cardboard in front of radiator. Still no heat! Cold in michigan!

Do I need to change the core or is there something I'm missing?
How do I change the heater core on a '95 chevy caprice?
The only time you should have to change the heater core is when it's leaking. I would have to look at it to exactly know, but you should check the following:

    Does your heater motor work?

    Is your coolant level up?

Is there an air lock? do you need to bleed the system?

Does the engine run hot? ( you might have a bad water pump)

What is the heat range on your new thermostat?

Lastly, if anybody was fooling around under the dash they may have un plugged one of the vacuum lines that go to your heat selection switch. Try to get under there or remove the board that the switch is on and carefully inspect the back of the switch. You want to make sure that all the vacuum lines are plugged in without un plugging anything.

    Good luck
How do I change the heater core on a '95 chevy caprice?
NATHANIEL G has some good points and covers good areas however, I have seen heater cores in need of replacement due to plug up. In most cases it has been on GM vehicles because of the lack of performing coolant flushes. GM claims one can go 5 years or 100K miles before flushing the system out because dex-cool is supposed have longer life. Anyone thats been in the business long enough knows otherwise and thats why we recommend to our customers that the coolant be power flushed as soon as their GM warranty expires. That stuff turns to gel and causes all sorts of problems.

On a final note, NATHANIEL G suggested you check the heater control valve. Thats actually the first thing I would have checked, I'll walk you through it. Now I'm going assume that this is your only problem since you were not too specific in regards to weather or not the car is actually reaching operating temperature. Once your car is fully warmed, locate your heater control valve which should be toward the firewall on your right side in the engine compartment. Now physically turn that valve to the opposite direction and hold it there while someone sits in the car with the heater on. Did warm air come out? If yes, then now you have to find out why; Is there a vacuum hose broken? etc. If not, thats the best I can do without you giving us further information and even then it's hard to diagnose things without physically being there. Good luck!
should be passenger side up under the dash,

Why would my car keep overheating?

I have changed the thermostat, new relay, new fuse, and the coolant is not low. The fans are working properly, and there is no leak under the car. It is also not leaking into the oil. HELP!!!
Why would my car keep overheating?
Gummed up radiator, or possibly a collapsing radiator hose. You can have the radiator flushed with a special chemical additive and see if that helps, change out the main hoses while your in there.
Why would my car keep overheating?
Check and make sure your fan is coming on and bleed the cooling system.
blocked heater core will cause coolant not to flow
Are you checking the coolant level when cold, at the radiator cap.

You have to check the water pump to see if it's working.

    Could be blocked radiator.

    Couldn't be blocked heater core.

Clean detris from in front of radiator.
That leaves the radiator to check out. The cooling fins might be obstructed from debris from engine block. You can get it rodded out, but you might need a new radiator, if it's old, and full of deposits.
you may have air in the cooling system.

    Bleed your cooling system
Radiators could be blocked/broken, they deal with removing the heat from the engine.
    flow problem

1 thermostat in upside down..don't scoff..ive seen pros's do it

2 hoses...can be soft and flatten under pressure, put on glove squeeze when hot, [engine off]

3 water pump...they do wear out without leaking,,ive seen them with blades worn off.

4 engine tune, misfire creates lots of heat

5 engine oil and tranny fluid...keep both clean and full,,,oil helps cool and tranny fluid gets cooled in radiator

6 radiator,,,sometimes they just get crudded up..

Do i have to wait for the rtv sealant to cure before i drive my car again?

i recently changed the radiator and thermostat in my car, i had to unscrew a pipe from the thermostat housing to get it out and i have to use rtv sealant on the screw, the package says it dries in and hour and cures in 24 hrs, does that mean i cant drive my car for 24 hrs? or will it be alright if i drive it after leaving it overnight?
Do i have to wait for the rtv sealant to cure before i drive my car again?
You will be fine. Dealers and shops drive them after 2 hours
Do i have to wait for the rtv sealant to cure before i drive my car again?
it should be fine if you leave it cure for at least 12 hrs.... youll be fine
Drive it right away....its not gonna hurt. I've done it dozens of times without leaks.
Overnight is enough time. I've driven within a couple of hours and it was ok.

Air pockets in engine block.Fill coolant at cap on top of the engine, not only in the reservoir.
My car (1994 lexus es300) overhieating after i change the radiator, thermostat please let me know thank you?
you may have installed the thermostat up side down,it may be the wrong thermostat, the spring part of the thermostat should be down, you may have lost to much coolant, add more coolant
My car (1994 lexus es300) overhieating after i change the radiator, thermostat please let me know thank you?
When you fill the radiator, you still could have an air pocket but usually it will overheat only at idle. If you think it is, wait until engine is cold or cooled down and fill the radiator directly (not the plastic reservoir) and with the engine running until it is topped off. Then fill the plastic reservoir to the Hot max level.

If it isn't the above problem, then your water pump could be defective. Or the drive belt is loose or broken. When a water pump goes bad alot of times you will hear the bearing grinding type of noise.

My question is why did you change the radiator? Was it leaking?

    Anyways good luck

Car overheating but turning on heater seems to keep it under control. Has had thermostat replaced and ....?

In early fall of last year we had to have to engine changed in our 2005 Dodge Stratus. I believe the engine is a 2.7 V6. The replacement engine had about 60k on it according to our mechanic. Anyway, when we used the A/C the engine would seem to drag more than usual. Then as it got warmer out this year the engine temp. gauge would get up in the red. After a few instances of this I had a friend help me change the thermostat. Now after going about 10 miles or so the car will still start getting hot and I'll turn the heater on and it will lower the gauge to about normal. I'm wondering,if I did happen to install the thermostat in backward, would I be getting this problem. What could it be? I also just back-flushed the cooling system this past weekend and it didn't seem to help. I don't seem to be losing any coolant either. HELP!
Car overheating but turning on heater seems to keep it under control. Has had thermostat replaced and ....?
That's not likely to be the thermostat - if it was stuck closed you wouldn't make it three miles.

That the heater helps so much tells the story; your radiator is plugged. I am guessing tap water has been put in the radiator, probably to dilute antifreeze. Use only purified water in radiators. No flush will get the hard water deposits out. The most obvious sign the thermostat is working but the radiator is not cooling the coolant is to carefully feel the radiator hoses when the engine is at normal operating temperature or above. The upper radiator hose should be too hot to put your hand on while counting to three, but the lower hose should be cool enough to grip for a three count. Once the radiator hoses are off you can do the gold test - try running the water from a garden hose through it. The radiator should easily pass all the water a 5/8 inch garden hose can put out. The last plugged radiator I replaced (in a friend's 2000 Focus last year) was so plugged I couldn't even blow through it - it was like blowing through a couple of soda straws. $110 later a new aftermarket radiator had it working like new.
Car overheating but turning on heater seems to keep it under control. Has had thermostat replaced and ....?
Could be installed backwards or not right stat.
Yes, putting the thermostat in backwards will cause your car to overheat.
The temp. bulb on the thermostat should face the engine. the radiator core blocked or damaged? Is your cooling fan working? Bad water pump?
check your fan make sure it is working and check your oil for water spots if water spots warped head on the Thermo stat the spring goes down when you turn the heater on it pulls it thought the Radiator so that is not clogged CHECK THE FAN
That the 'stat out and run the engine without one. The only purpose of the 'stat is to help the car heater warm-up faster, the engine could care less if it's there or not. If it still gets too warm, there's a problem somewhere else in the cooling system.
The air wasn't properly purged from the system. Likely the coolant level is very low. Allow the engine cool %26amp; remove the rad cap. Fill with 50/50 mix antifreeze/water. Fill the expansion tank to COLD level, if equipped.

How do i change the thermostat on my 2005 Jetta gli 1.8T thermostat and where is the location of the part?

Everytime i start and the engine and drive the car until the engine is hot, then two or the three blocks later the engine starts overheating and tells me to stop the vehicle. I checked the radiator and it was cold. So what could be the problem the thermostat, or the water sensor etc.?

Before getting into parts changing and a guessing game stop by a RADIATOR SHOP and ask them what is wrong.

if your thermostat stuck close then the computer will trigger a code and the MIL (check engine light) will be on...most likely your water pump is broken, an easy way to check is open the cap of the coolant reservoir, have someone rev the engine between 3k and 4k, see if the coolant circulate in the reservoir (the coolant should come out from the smaller coolant line, from upper reservoir), the coolant should comes out fluently and not dripping !!!...good luck
the thermostat is located behind the alternator inside a black plastic housing with a hose attached to it. when you take it out, stick your finger inside the hole and feel the water pump impeller with your finger, make sure it isn't broken and that it is tight on the shaft. the factory water pumps have plastic impellers that break and fail to circulate coolant.

My Car has no Thermostat but still over heats... I changed out the temp. sensor but still no AC what can I do?

For starters, put a thermostat in - I recommend one from the dealer because of bad experiences with after market thermostats. The thermostat is important for fuel economy (cold engines suck down fuel) and for cooling - the thermostat sends hot water to the radiator while the water coming into the engine is only warm. Because of that the radiator gets rid of more heat when there is a thermostat than when it does not and the engine gets cooler water coming in to cool it.

Once there is a thermostat in place so the system can work normally, if it still overheats check back with us. We need to know make, model and year of the car, and when it overheats (idle and low speeds, on the freeway, or both). However, if there has been more than a bit of tap water put in the system the radiator is probably plugged and has to be replaced. That leads to overheating on the freeway and eventually all the time. The temperature just builds up.
