I need to know why my heat in my car comes and goes?

from what i know about cars you can find the root by elimnation not water pump cause its not overheating not heater core cause theres no anti freeze in or leaking around the car so that leaves me to think its the thermostat and i just changed it i must at though after changing thermost it the heat didnt start right away really need help the car is a 94 caddy sls norstar engine
I need to know why my heat in my car comes and goes?
check fluid level when cool
I need to know why my heat in my car comes and goes?
The heat doesn't start right away because that car has automatic climate control. If you have the temp control set at 70, the heat won't turn on until it can put out air that is at least that warm, which on a cold morning can take a couple of minutes. All cars with auto climate control behave this way.

The heat will %26quot;come and go%26quot; based on what the temperature is set for and what it actually is in the car - just like it does in a house/apartment with forced hot air heat.

If you want the air sooner, you can get around it by using defrost mode instead of the automatic mode, that will turn on right away, but it sounds to me like it's working properly.

Hope this helps.
Do you hear a damper (otherwise known as a mode door) noise? Maybe the damper (mode door) is opening and closing as if you are turning on and off the Heat.,...which could be a bad control head

My car was spewing anit-freeze, what happened?

I have a chrysler 300m 2001. As I was driving down the street, steam started coming into the vents and spewing antifreeze from under the hood as my resivor/temperature light came on. I drove home and parked it. What is wrong? My ex boyfriend says it was proably the thermostat because the air went out first and that it needs to be changed, do you think this is the case? Do you think it would be costly given the type of car, I am on a very tight budget this week.
My car was spewing anit-freeze, what happened?
thermostat and gasket - about 15.00

Time to replace - about 1/2 hour.

on a scale of 1-10 (10 being very hard) this is about a 2.

And this is prob the issue for yours
My car was spewing anit-freeze, what happened?
It does sound like a thermostat, and that is usually the problem. It may also be a bad water pump, cooling fan or just a slipping belt.
it could be one of 3 things - the water pump, the radiator or the thermostat. to me it sounds like the water pump. good luck!
one of yer hoses has hole in it
The thermostat is a very easy thing to change out. But I must tell you if you take it to the shop it will cost more there then if you go buy the part for about 5.00 and have your boyfriend do it.

1998 Grand Am thermostat?

I haven't seen this car yet, but when it gets here, I need to change the thermostat. Need to know where it is. This is a 3.8 V-6.
1998 Grand Am thermostat?
Grand Prix you mean? because the grand Am's don't have the 3.8's Other then that look along the upper radiator hose. you'll come to the thermostat housing. it'll be in here. remember to bleed off the air in the cooling system after you replace it and fill it up with coolant or you will have no heat. There are two little screws. one should be right there on top of the thermostat housing. warm the car up to operating temp and open this valve to bleed off the air. do this with any other bleed screw. over an over again.
1998 Grand Am thermostat?
follow the upper radiator hose to the engine, you hit the thermostat housing and the thermostat is undernieth that
My sister has one! But I don't know where it is, although like any kind of car, look for the radiator (if you have to ask us where that is, go get a bicycle) follow the hose that leaves the top of it, mostly to the right, and you'll see it, it wil before it disapears in side engine, now if it isnt over there, go to left side. Good Luck

What would be the reason why a car is overheating?

okay it's a 93 isuzu rodeo and we've put an electric fan on it and replaced the thermostat and changed a couple of hoses that were leaking and it's still overheating what else could be the problem??
What would be the reason why a car is overheating?
this may b due 2 d radiator problem............ check whether any leakage is there in d radiator......... or else any other fault in it...... try this........
What would be the reason why a car is overheating?
Your best bet is take it to the mechanic to be honest! It definately something to do with the radiator. It obviously not being cooled enough before it over heats. You should check for fluid leaking from the radiator. You mite jus have to get a new radiator and if its a 93 depending on the condition of it you might as well just get a newer one. Hope it works out for you.
if you have anti freeze/coolant in your radiator, while the car is running put your hand under the tailpipe (exhaust) (dont touch the pipe, it will burn you ) just for a few seconds,

if your hand smells sweet like the smell of antifreeze/coolant , its a good chance your head gasket is a gonner. another telltale sign is if you got steam coming out of your tailpipe all the time. also if you should happen to flush your radiator out and get oil mixed in with the coolant or water, that is a good indicator that your head gasket took a dump.
The cooling system is meant to be a sealed system under pressure. Each pound of pressure raises the boilling point by something like 5 degrees so if their are any leeks in the system that allow the pressure to escape that will lower the temp at which your car will over heat. Try replacing the rad cap. To test head gasket most garages have a kit they use to test for exhaust gases in the coolant but sometimes if it is bad enough you can tell by simply looking at the coolant in the radiator while the car is running. If it looks foamy after the t stat has opened chances are bad gasket. Other possibilities are poor coolant flow or air trapped in the system.
Yeah its something to with the radiator has to be,might need a new one, make sure there oil and water in it aswell, not good when a when it doing dont drive it get it checked out asap.
Sounds like a head gasket blown....you may want to have a block test done.
your radiator could be plugged but if i was you i would go to a part store or a junk yard and get a new radiator and then strip the copper out of the old one scrap it and make half or all your money back
Sounds like a Blown Head Gasket; With the System Cool Remove the Radiator cap, Start the Engine and after a short while you will Smell Exhaust in the Radiator, Sometimes Water in the Oil or Steam from the Tail Pip. Are you running Water or Coolant? Coolant=50-50 Mixture of Clean Water %26amp; Anti-Freeze %26quot;Used All Year Round!%26quot; Also sounds like you need a New Radiator cap %26amp; Cooling System Boiled/Flushed Out.
could be head gasket

Can needing an oil change overheat your car?

ive had problems with my car overheating before and i had it worked on my thermostat has been replaced and there is no leak.
Can needing an oil change overheat your car?
if you have little or no oil in the engine, it will cause large amounts of friction which translates into heat. running a car like this is very dangerous as you will likely destroy the engine. so to answer your question, yes, it can.
Can needing an oil change overheat your car?
no.unless your only running 1 quart of oil but i doubt that.
As long as the level is full, needing an oil change won't cause an overheating concern.

If left unchecked, eventually it can cause a lot of other concerns though.

  • My car blew warm air after the indicator jump to red zone, then I took it to the repair shop, they?

changed the thermostat , as soon as next day, my air conditioner blew warm air when I want cold air, then I added in 1 can 14 oz.ez freeze R_134a but still blow warm air as before, should I tried to add in 1 more can before I take it to the repair shop, because, under the hood the indicator show it need 2.5 lb, but they doesn't it get a bit cooler then before, I use the soap and water to check if there is any leakage, but doesn't look like there is any leakage at all. Please help.
My car blew warm air after the indicator jump to red zone, then I took it to the repair shop, they?
sounds like you had several issues is the clutch engaging ? on the a/c compressor ? are the a/c fans comming on ?
My car blew warm air after the indicator jump to red zone, then I took it to the repair shop, they?
A quick way to look for leaks is with a black light the leak will glow bright green. I suspect you have a seized clutch however.

Help! My car keeps overheating and I can't find the problem.?

    I have 1998 Honda Civic DX 2DR 4 cylinder.

I recently changed three of my sensors. 1. In the thermostat housing. 2. and 3. The two underneath the distributor cap. The gage sensor, and i believe it's called the Cooling Fan Switch.

Before i've changed them, i put a switch in my car, so when i turn on the ignition, the fan automatically runs. I wanted to finally fix it, cause i figured the motor will be wearing out. So today after i've changed three of the sensors, and installed a new thermostat. It automatically shoots up saying my car is overheating. I thought it could be electrical, something with my PCM and fuses, but i checked my fuse box inside the hood and everything works. I checked the fuse panel under my steering wheel, and i'm pretty sure everything works, due to the fact my turn signals, horn, dashboard etc. works. I have no idea why it keeps overheating, I put coolant in my water reservoir and also radiator before i turned on the car to see if my fan works. I started the car without the switch on. My fan never went on, after changing three of my sensors and changing the cooling fan relay. I put the switch back in and while driving my car for work, all the coolant that i have had in my water reservoir was sucked up and gone. I put water in the water reservoir about and hour and half later, gone. I let my car cool down and left it alone for about 2-3 hours. I then put coolant in my water reservoir this time, and driving home, (5 min drive) the temperature gage on my dashboard was saying its hot not even driving it for 3 minutes, it usually takes my car about 7-10 minutes maybe a little less to get to where the temperature gage should be. While driving the car home, remember a 5 minute drive, the water reservoir start heating up and steam was exiting out of the reservoir. Keep in mind that i also put the switch back in and the fan was running the whole time. I have no idea why after changing the three sensors and installing a new thermostat my cars tells me its overheating. I hope what i just wrote down can be helpful whoever decides to answer this question, and give feedback. any help is much appreciated.
Help! My car keeps overheating and I can't find the problem.?
The first thing to check is the water pump. Is it working? When the car decides its hotter than the thermostat (I believe yours is a 190* thermostat) it opens up and starts circulating water. If the water pump is bad the upper hose will be real hot and the lower hose will still be cool. Reach down there and check it with your hand, is it hotter than the upper hose? If so waters not circulating. Another thing with those engines is sometimes you are filling the radiator and the water is not getting inside the engine, then it just kinda vacuum locks and it never gets to cool the engine. But from what I read of your novel you wrote up there I doubt that's whats happening. If your over heating first check to make sure you have coolant, next do the hose check to see if your getting circulation, the cold lower hose can also be a result of a plugged radiator. Next check the thermostat. I like to remove the thermostat and run the car with out it when I suspect its the problem, if it is the car will be fine with it removed. Then just replace it with a new one. With the engine running squish the upper hose to restrict it. If you feel the water/coolant rush fast as soon as you let go then you know the pump is working. At that point you will need to look at the radiator. Looks like I ended up writing an answer almost as long as your question...
Help! My car keeps overheating and I can't find the problem.?
air block.cracked head, head gasket, could leave the thermostat out and see wat happens.
    Let me be honest.

I didn't read that saga you call a question.

    But I'm a take a shot that it's a lemon.
OK, well ,, what ya need there is a new fan on the radiator , A completely new fan assembly . you can check the fan by jumping the wires to see if the fans working ,, If it's not , replace it ,, if it is , then run a wire to the fan from the fuse box, then back to a switch that you will install on or under the dash . Just remember to turn on the switch everytime you start the car , Or run it the hot wire to the fan from the ignition side of the fuse box , that way you will get power to the fan when ever you start the engine If it's not really over heating ,, then ya might have to go into the computr and reset the notifiers , the sensor codes are still reading it because they werent reset .. This might help ya ,, without seeing and looking for ones self , It's hard , but since you went the whole route try that one ... Auto zone can tell ya how to reset the codes , .. C~~YA !!!
Sounds like Head Gasket, now for what this little thing is it is a major job. 10p worth of equipment but half engine has to come out to get to it. Looking at approx 拢200 all up - sorry :)

Ask garage if they takle Paypal as a company I called about a briefcase didn't advertise it but they happy to send me invoice -m you won't know til you ask
If there's no obvious signs of a water leak, i.e. a puddle under the car then the only other cause is a head gasket problem. Check the underside of the oil filler cap and if there is a creamy emulsion on it then its a dead giveaway.
well you seem to have a leak some where if you keep putting water in it maybe a head gasket or the return hose on the bottom of the radiator or a crack in the radiator you need to find the leak first if you can't see water spill out any where try and put your hand buy the tail pipe and see if you get water on your hand when the car is running if you have water on your hand smell it and if its anti freeze then you have a bigger promblem than that but yea find that leak first

Why is my 1997 Chevrolet Lumina overheating?

It keeps overheating. When I got it, there was a leak in the water pump, so I changed it and it still overheated. I tried changing the thermostat, but it still overheats. There was a sticker telling me that the car can distinguish between antifreezes so I disconnected the battery for the night, but nothing changed. Can anyone tell me what I need to do?
Why is my 1997 Chevrolet Lumina overheating?
What engine? If it is the 3.1 v-6, the air in the cooling system has to be bled out. There are 2 bleed points, one on top of the water line for the heater (which is the black tube that comes out of the top just above the water pump) and the other is at the upper radiator hose inlet on the thermostat housing (some models have a silver tube from this one to the coolant tank. If it has the tube, you only need to bleed from the first point.). The fittings are 7 mm and slotted screw. Get the engine warm with the cap off, and open the bleed screw(s) until all the air is vented. Then shut the engine off, top up the coolant and install the cap. I always recheck the coolant level after about 2 hours. Good luck to you.
Why is my 1997 Chevrolet Lumina overheating?
fill the radiator crank motor watch the flow of coolant should be able to see thermostat working or not if it over heats in a short time either therm or fan or belt slipping if its like after you hit the highway at speed try flushing the radiator or having it dip at a radiator shop
    cause it's fukkkkkkkkkking old maaaaan.
Are you using the proper type of coolant? If you can hear your coolant boiling then you need to get the proper type of coolant in which the boiling point is higher.
Try having the radiator flushed. It may be clogged.
Sounds like you have a 60degree V6. Overheating is what they do. Check head gaskets and/or cracked heads.
If the fans are working then it may be a clogged radiator. Do you have the right mixture of water to coolant? If you are going to flush the system then take the thermostat out before doing it. If you replace the radiator then check around for prices. A good radiator shop will probably be cheaper than a parts store. If you are going to keep the car then look at a good quality aluminum radiator.

    Dirty coolant, just changed thermostat?

Hey everyone me and my buddy where changing the thermostat on my 2001 ford ranger 2.3l truck and realized it was the wrong thermostat so we left it off (coolant was drained with what ever little bit was left in block that didn't drain) couldnt get the thermostat in for 4 days because it was a dealership part and it was saturday. on saturday night and sunday night it never got below 29-25 degrees or so (here in michigan) but he got real worried that the block could crack so we replaced it again with the broken thermostat and put new coolant in and I could still drive it (no heat of course) and its driving fine but it seems like the coolant is a little foamy and dirty after putting bran new coolant in. and i checked the oil and i don't know a whole lot about cars but it had a little bit of white stuff in it only a fingertip's worth and i checked it 7-8 other times and it never showed up again running or not running but it does have a few little bubbles... im worried but it doesn't seem like it got cold enough for the engine to crack and there is no leaks from the thermostat what could this be?
    Dirty coolant, just changed thermostat?
If your coolant is still foamy, try to wait a day or so without driving the car to let it settle. Then check to see if there's oil on top of the coolant. If so, that's a pretty sure sign that your head gasket is leaking or your block cracked, allowing oil to mix with the coolant or vice versa. The white stuff in your oil sounds suspiciously like how coolant looks in oil, too.

On the other hand, if you didn't actually drive the car and you have 50/50 antifreeze/water for your coolant, I seriously doubt that the coolant would've frozen and caused your block to crack. I suppose the foam could've just been from some impurities in the old antifreeze. Unless you flush out your cooling system, you'll have a little bit of old coolant mixed in with the new. That's not catastrophic, though, it'll just shorten the life of your coolant slightly.
    Dirty coolant, just changed thermostat?
make sure you use dexcool (orange) and not ethelyne glycol (green) do not mix the 2 together. when you change the thermo again flush your cooling system completely including block and heater core.

Why would a mechanic change ignition coil spark plugs do tune up later say the car has a c?

car first had cracked radiator Hyundai changed radiator hoses thermostat water pump

few days later car wouldnt start another mechanic said ignition coil spark plugs 3 days

later car stopped again now says head gasket cracked accepts no responsibility
Why would a mechanic change ignition coil spark plugs do tune up later say the car has a c?
Sounds like you need to find a mechanic, not a %26quot;parts changer%26quot;! There is a huge difference! Do not %26quot;tell%26quot; the mechanic what you want done, tell him the symptoms and ask for a detailed, itemized estimate for parts and labor for the job. Have the Mechanic list the repairs as %26quot;Essential%26quot; and Non-Essential%26quot; in nature, then you can see exactly what MUST be done to get the car back to usable condition. An example of and Essential repair might be the %26quot;cracked radiator%26quot; or %26quot;blown head gasket%26quot;. These would prevent the car from being usable. An example of a Non-essential repair might be something like %26quot;air conditioner does not cool%26quot; or %26quot;radio does not work%26quot;. These repairs could wait and do not stop the car from running.
Why would a mechanic change ignition coil spark plugs do tune up later say the car has a c?
You need to find a mechanic and stop going to these parts changers. A mechanic diagnoses the problem and just fixes what needs to be fixed.
radiator failure usually does in heads %26amp; gaskets, because drivers don't watch their gauges and stop when motors get hot. Drivers also don't inspect their cars often enough to check for developing faults. coil %26amp; plugs seems odd, but not all mechanics can diagnose properly. Cracked head is your fault. it was to be expected from the other damages. He should have warned you of it being likely, and asked for permission to pull the head off and check it. Heads can sometimes be welded up, depending on how badly corroded they are, then they have to be machined flat again. An old Hyundai isn't worth the effort, usually.
Agreed on finding a mechanic that is more able to explain things to you.

But, you may have an apples/oranges issue going on here. A cracked radiator that led to overheating could also affect the head-gasket - and that failure may not be immediate. Be glad that _only_ the head-gasket was affected if that is all it is.

The need for an ignition-coil and spark-plug change is very likely independent of the cracked radiator/head-gasket issue. But it is possible that the wrong plugs were installed at some point causing the overheating (too-high heat-range plugs) which in turn led to everything else. But your check-engine light should have come on if this were the case.

A competent mechanic will do a leak-down test to determine what is the problem with the head-gasket - and also remove the spark-plugs when he cranks the engine the following morning to prevent a cracked rod or cylinder if full of coolant. And then a compression test to see if anything else is compromised.

Good luck with it. Find someone familiar with Hyundais and who wants to retain your business. In other words has an incentive to be honest. |

It would also be useful to know the age/mileage of the vehicle and if any of the 100,000mile warranty still remains.

This is from a post I made an hour and a half ago, doing a update so other people can see, I found out that those black specs im pretty sure they are not oil I used a paper towel and pulled some out and they didn't smear like oil, almost looked like plastic...and a few of my responses can be scene if you click on my name and read last question before with same title, read those and tell me what you think i should do

I just went out to look at coolant and you can see very few tiny black spots that almost look like plastic to be honest, not sure if thats oil or not, but the coolant is bright green still just not clear. there where about 10 little specs of black
Dirty coolant, just changed thermostat part 2?
Doesn't sound like anything to worry about. What you need to do though is once you get the new thermostat in open the drains on your radiator put a water hose int the radiator fill and flush the whole system out. It will take a while especially it being as cold as it is. But you need to flush the system. There are some things you can buy to flush it with but reg tap water works fine. Just flush it until anything coming out of the drains is clear. Also, you will need to let the engine run while flushing.... Then shut off the engine let all the water drain out. Then add a jug of anti freeze and fill the rest with water. Check the rating you get with a tester. Dont want to be under protected. The black dots you were speaking of could be from lots of things. Not to worry at this point. Just need to replace therm and flush system. Should be good to go!

My 04 pontiac gto isnt putting out heat like it used to.?

the heat isnt as hot as it was about a year ago. im thinking its the thermostat. how often are thermostats typically changed? my car has 48,000 miles and is well maintained?
My 04 pontiac gto isnt putting out heat like it used to.?
Water boils at a higher temperature than antifreeze, so its important, too use the right mixture of coolant to water. Their are 2-different types as well, use the one for your particular car. Make sure you check the exact freeze point mixture, this will effect heat effeciency. use a syphon type gage thru the resorviour after your car has operated for awhile, and the fluid is well mixed. this gage will determine the protection level, and operating temp. (if it doesnt match the thermostat)ie. is pure water, your themostat may never close, if the mixure is too much antifreeze your thermostat may open much less frequently,(usually 50/50 mixture) and still not be hot enough, in addition you probably have an electric fan which also has an operating temp. range, based on a sensor in the radiator, somewhere at the bottom. Lastly remove the leaves or anything, that may be blocking, your heater core, and you may want too reverse flush your system. I had a car one time where it kept overheating, and I wonder if the heater core was at fault, because I was only getting cool air out, even when the car overheated. The problem was their was no circulation in the system, because the heater core was plugged, calcified and rusted internally. Good Luck!
My 04 pontiac gto isnt putting out heat like it used to.?
I'd not only check the coolant level, check the coolant's quality and mixture 50/50 with a proper anti-freeze tester, be sure that the engine is cold when you do this and the tester reads a good -40c.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if the summer was quite hot and the coolant burned off water etc it could be quite low and require testing and more anti-freeze, you can buy the tester from walmarts etc for about 10 bucks. Also if the weather in your are is extremely cold then you can mix it 60/40 or to about -48c but don't mix it more then that ever.
You might try backflush the heater core, the holes in it are a lot smaller then the radiator, tend to clog up. I usually just take the heater hoses off the engine, put a hose to it from both direction til it runs clear. If you have too take them off the heater core itself, be very careful, a lot of them are plastic, and break very easily!
check your coolant level alot of times its alil low and that will fix the problem atleast its been the case with me a few times make sure car is not hot and check to see if the radiater is full then also check the over flow and fill that as well

Help no heat in mercury sable. replaced thermostat no heat?

THE DUMB CAR STOPPED GIVEN ME HEAT. AIR IS BLOWING OUT. NOT HOT. THERMOSTAT WAS CHANGED STILL NO HEAT. THE FLOOR BOARD IS NOT WET. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!! i HAVE ANTIFREEZE. I AM FREEZZING HELP PLS.
Help no heat in mercury sable. replaced thermostat no heat?
Your heater core could have gone out, your heatercore dont always leak either when they go out.Or it could be stopped up.Best thing to do is change your heatercore and you will probably have your problem fixed.
Help no heat in mercury sable. replaced thermostat no heat?
    It's the heater core.
Check to see if your car has a vacuum switch inline with one of the hoses If so, replace it.

(it will look like a small %26quot;can%26quot; with a vacuum line going to it)
    FIRST TURN OFF CAP LOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!

    then well talk.

sable has only a few parts to the heat system, core, blower, resistor, switch, relay. the newer ones also have control valve.

there is a new t-stat, and coolant is full, and no wet mess. means core is good.

air is blowing so that means switch, relay, resistor, and blower are all working.

if its not blowing hot air it IS either the valve in the heater line is broken and stuck in the 'off' position OR you dont have enough coolant (or you put your thermostat in backwards)

ps. i just today fixed a 94 sable heater.
the engine may have an air lock in the block, could have happened when thermostat was installed. Can loosen hose clamp at upper radiator hose next to rad, slide a pick under hose to see if air comes out or if coolant... May just have to bleed the block.

2 the water pump may be toast not pumping water... engine will over heat.

3 heater core may be plugged (never use stop leak products they can plug heater cores) heater hoses may be plugged, might try a radiator flush job.
i own a repair shop, and its possible it has a bad heater control valve on it,,this is what lets the hot water go through it to give off heat in the heater core,,its located on the out side in the heater hose,,its a valve that mounts between the hose,if this is bad there will be no heat, and also its possible it may be vapor locked in the heater core its self,,since you don't have a leak its maybe the valve or the inside control unit, these do go bad ,and wont let the heat divide from the cold air,,,check both heater hoses to make sure there getting warm, and if they are this means the coolant is going through the heater core,it may just have a bad control unit not allowing the heat vent to open up on it,,good luck,i hope this help,s,,at least you have a good starting point with it,,have a good x-mas.
I have a similar problem with my car...

The heater core is probably the problem, however, you should have the entire cooling system checked including the radiator. Make sure it isn't overheating and that the radiator is not plugged.

It might be wise to check that the control that adjusts the heat is actually doing its job and turning the heat on at the heater core.

You might also try getting a Hayes manual for your car and looking through the trouble shooting section to see if it has any suggestions. It should give you all of the info you would need to replace the heater core.
flush out the cooling system.the heater core could be plugged up.
    heater core is bad

    Changed the thermostat...now what?

I just bought a used car and am wondering what I can do to warm it up. MI is cold in the winter (right now it's 6 degrees). We replaced the thermostat yesterday, but it didn't change very much. My dad said there may be a leak in the radiator because there was some steam-very little-coming out. Is there anything I can do to make it work properly? Eventually it did get warmer and the gauge went up, but how long should it take? Can this be repaired without going broke?
    Changed the thermostat...now what?
Believe it or not, some auto's are built for the area they are sold in.

    Where is the auto from?

First, where was the steam coming from? If the housing of the thermostat was not seated properly, the gasket may be leaking.

Or it could be as simple as tightening a hose clamp.

    Try it.

Radiator leaks are pretty easy to spot. If you don't see water coming out once the auto's been warm and you've turned the car off, there probably isn't a leak there.

Keep an eye on your overflow reservoir.

As for the thermostat, when the car is cool. Remove the radiator cap, crank the auto, turn the heater and fan on high. Watch to see if the water is circulating. It may take a few moments

(5-10 minutes) if or when the water starts moving the thermostat is working properly. You're OK there.

Another thought. Is it the original radiator? Sometimes if the radiator is larger than the engines requirements, it seems to take forever for the auto to become warm. If the radiator is to big, warm is all you'll get.

Try allowing the car to warm up before you actually plan to drive.

10-15 minutes should do the trick.

Unless you need to change the radiator, I see little or no cost here. Just patients.

    I hope this helps you.
    Changed the thermostat...now what?
Um see a mechanic and keep blankets and coats in your car
Hi, the first thing that comes to mind is to use commercially available radiator sealant. This is inexpensive and can get the radiator sealed until more permanent repairs can be made. It will last quite a while in some cases depending on how serious the leak is. It's basically a liquid that you add to the radiator. You have to follow the directions very closely as it only works when the water in the radiator is at a certain temperature.

You should not use this product more than once as it can, in the long run, cause the radiator to not be as efficient (especially in summer).

The leak could be in a hose and the repair could be as simple as tightening the hose connectors or replacing the hoses. If the radiator itself is leaking, then the best solution is to replace the radiator. There are some shops that can repair leaking radiators but sometimes simply replacing the radiator is not much different in price than repairing it (but this depends on the shop you go to).
Replace the radiaditor cap and make sure it a pressure cap.. If you have a drop light you can throw it under the vehicle engine at night to keep some warmth on it. Bout a 10 minute warm up without some kind of heat.If you find out the radiator has a leak get some stop leak and add it to your radiator until you can replace it. And solid antifreeze. Im a diesel mechanic for the government.
Your coolant level could be a little bit too low add some antifreeze to it. Low coolant level will starve the heater core especially at an idle.
A properly working cooling system should keep the car warm when in operation. I would have the cooling system checked out by a reliable mechanic or garage.

I would not put any sealer in the raditator. I have replaced to many radiators, and heater cores from people that have.
make sure coolant level is ok and watch for leak if everything ok then get yourself a piece of cardboard and put in fr5ont of grill that will warm your car quicker and keep it running warmer but keep an eye on temp guage if it it gets too hot take out cardboard
If there is a little steam coming out that means that the coolant is heating up just fine. Does the heater blower work ok? That blows air through a real small radiator called the heater core. There are two small radiator hoses that go into the firewall under the hood on the passenger side and from there to the heater core. They are about an inch thick. When the car does warm up feel those two hoses. They should be hot. If not it means that the coolant is not circulating through the heater core properly. If the radiator is leaking you really need to have it repaired. Putting any kind of sealant into the radiator is not a good idea.
If the engine is not getting warm enough for you pay close attention to the degree thermostat you have installed. The higher the degree thermostat, such as a 195 degree, the warmer the engine will stay, allowing better heat. As far as a radiator leak, this would not cause the engine to run colder. If the radiator was leaking, this would allow the coolant to leave the system, and the engine to eventually overheat. In the cold, such as 6 degrees, if the car is outside, it will take a good 15 minutes for the engine to start warming up. I would say in 15-25 minutes from a cold start the engine should be a noraml operating tempature.
Try replacing the temprature switch, and also sometimes there is an aditional thermostat somewhere on the side of the radiator.

Make sure your fan hasn,t been wired to come on constant.
Could be a lot of things. Does it heat up when sitting but not heat up when driving? This is a common problem on older cars when it is VERY cold out. Cold air flowing over the radiator when driving (think 6 degrees with a 55MPH wind) can keep it from heating up properly. What type of car is it? You could also have a blocked/cracked radiator or heater core. Have the radiator pressure tested. Many reputable shops will do this for free or a small fee. Have the coolant tested while you are there.

I let my car warm up for 10-15 minutes before driving it if it is really cold. This not only helps with the heat but allows the oil to %26quot;thin%26quot; a little before straining the engine.
Check your heater valve, it is in-line with your heater hoses under the hood, make sure the vacuum line is hooked upto it and the valve moves, isn't frozen.

My car is overheating and I've tried changin a lot of parts. Any help?

I have a Ford Explorer 95' 4W 4.0 and I flushed the radiator and drained the wasteful water and then I changed the water pump and the thermostat for new ones and also the antifreeze and the problem that is now showing is that it's overheating. The arrow on the tempetarure goes up to heat. Does someone knows what's going on? Why is that happening?
My car is overheating and I've tried changin a lot of parts. Any help?
I had the same prob with a car i had i was told that the radiator was to small for engine so i got a bigger one and that fixed it
My car is overheating and I've tried changin a lot of parts. Any help?
sounds like you have a fan clutch problem.
make sure there is no air in the cooling system, if overheating drive down highway, not the fan clutch, but the radiator, driving slow might be the fan, other than that, always check for a water leak first.
check to make sure the engine is really over heating and its not just a bad temp sensor get a temperature gun and check the temp at the sensor and make sure it reads the same as your gauge. if its good then make sure all the belts are tight for the pump and fan.

Id bet dollars to donuts your head gasket is bad.these cars are bad for it.ive dont lots of them and they did just what yours is doing.hope this helps.

the used radiator may be full of stop leak
sounds to me you need to flush the system sounds like your radiator is partialy clogged

94 Prelude overheating, but nothing hot under the hood. Change Thermostat already, what next?

I have a 94 prelude that i had the engine replaced in back in November. Everything was running fine, but the car would go past the middle point for temp when the car would sit for a while, but then it would go back to the middle point on its own.

Well, last saturday i was on a gravel rd and i peeled out and gravel kicked up and about 5-10 minutes later, i notice the temp gauge was all the way hot. I have changed the thermostat, blead the line, and refilled the coolant and the car gets hot is only about 1 minute. It literally goes from off and cool to all the way hot in about 60-90 seconds. Also, although the temp gauge is all the way hot, the radiator cap, plastic resovoir, no hoses, or the engine is hot. I take the radiator cap off and the coolant is not hot at all.

what is my issue. Please help?
94 Prelude overheating, but nothing hot under the hood. Change Thermostat already, what next?
Replace the temp gauge sensor and see if that's the culprit. Also, for $35 you can get a radiator cap with a build in temp gauge, so you can compare and see if your dash gauge is screwy.

I think my car is overheating?

Hi , I currently own a 99 Cadillac sts , and had a leak in one if the lower rad hoses about 3 months ago. I've since replaced the leaking hose but since the leak my thermostat goes above half in traffic when idling and cold air comes out. While driving it's ok? I would think it's the thermostat? The fluid level is ok, is it easy for a handy guy to change the thermostat myself if this is the cause?
I think my car is overheating?
If you put in a lower hose and didn't install the spring that keeps it open it could be collapsing from pump suction when it gets hot.

Above half is normal for a temp gauge.
I think my car is overheating?
I'd try to bleed the air that might have entered the system and tends to go to the highest points. It interferes with the coolant circulation causing overheating.

Our car has been over heating, what could be wrong?

The car (a SEAT people carrier) heats on a long, not very steep hill, or on a gradual pull

Water pump and thermostat have been changed and the radiator has been checked.
Our car has been over heating, what could be wrong?
You should analyze instead of changing parts. It's cheaper that way.

Does the fan turn on when it get hot?

Is it holding coolant, or is the coolant leaking out somewhere?

Heat doesn't work after a thermostat change, '98 Dodge Stratus 2.4 DOHC.?

Quick details- Girlfriend ran car alone on the expressway, lost heat. Called me, I told her to check temp gauge, it was topped out. Drove down to check car, no busted belts/hoses, coolant at a normal level. Changed thermostat, got heat for about 5 minutes, then got cold (though not as cold as the outside temp.). Temp gauge is reading perfectly fine but no heat at all. It is cold in Michigan. Thanks
Heat doesn't work after a thermostat change, '98 Dodge Stratus 2.4 DOHC.?
probably air locked....should have a little bleeder type valve near the top of the engine, probably on one of the heater lines.....why did it overheat to begin with?
Heat doesn't work after a thermostat change, '98 Dodge Stratus 2.4 DOHC.?
If the problem started after changing the thermostat, you probably have an air pocket in the line. This is keeping the hot radiator water from reaching the heater core and warming up your inside air.

Take it to a mechanic and have them get the air out.
There is probably air in your heater core. Consult a repair manual on burping the cooling system. When burping run the car with the heater on. that will let the coolant flow through the heater core and pull the air out.
You got an air bubble. Fill the radiator with the heat settings wide open for max heat coming out of the daskboard. run the engine til it is full hot -- 10 minutes at least. DON't gun it -- you'll break up large bubbles into small ones - harder to get it all out.

I f that doesn't work, run the engine til it's full hot, turn it off and pull the heater hose where it is at its highest point in the engine bay.... be ready to put it right back on.... You'll know if you got a bubble or solid water....

GM 2.8 Liter and 3.1 Liter motors from ~ 1986 to 1998 have a real pain in the *** bubble spot just behind the thermostat...... So trace your hoses if you're still stuck.
I have a 2000 stratus with the same problem and now my blower motor resistor is going out have u gotten any good replys on this yet??

  • Why is my car over heating?

I have an 86 Nissan Maximan and it started heating up out of the blue. There are no leaks coming from the radiator and we changed the thermostat. I don't believe there are any ripped hoses.
Why is my car over heating?
    Check the following

    1. low level of coolant

    2. bad radiator cap

    3. water pump malfunctioning

    4. clog radiator

    5. fan not working properly

    Hope this helps!
Why is my car over heating?
    check your coolant level
Take a close look at the radiator. Check for missing fins between the coolant lines. My pickup had many fins missing and needed a recored radiator. Turn on the heater inside the car and it may help keeping the engine cooled down.
Might be the water pump is going out, or a faulty temperature sender in your engine block, or the radiator needs rodding out.
check coolant level fisrt,if the car is heating up while driving it could be bad sending unit or even gauge issue,if it only happens sitting still check the cooling fans and make sure they are operating properly

My 98 Eclipse GST Spyder has little steam/ white smoke coming out of the exhaust when car hasn't warmed up yet?

So basically my car has no check engine light, I don't feel any lose in power, I have no leaks, car has no problem with overheating and it never has or went above normal temperature, Had the oil change, had the radiator flushed had the thermostat changed, spark plugs and wires changed. and I even used KW nanotechnology to make sure any blown head gasket is repaired. Still some smoke/ steam is coming out of the exhaust and I dont know why it also only seems to happen in the morning when I warm up the car. Also I changed the batteries, anyone know a drive cycle to get a computer to scan it right.

Why does my car overheat in 70 mph not in 55mph 3 hrs str. drive on a hot day not at nite ?
Plugged catalytic converter, if equipped. Otherwise that type of heat stress and temperature indication would be normal, under the circumstances. Change coolant also, 50/50.
Why does my car overheat in 70 mph not in 55mph 3 hrs str. drive on a hot day not at nite ?
It sounds like the ignition timing is either too far advanced or even retarded. It can also be a faulty worn water pump.
    bad water pump
Try looking at the water pump. it may not be operating properly and check your fan clutch See if it is working. if the spring is bad it may not work at high speed

I have a 95 dodge spirit - it blows out cold air no heat the thermostat has been changed last year -help!?

I had the thermostat changed by 3 different mechanics in the past 1 and half - the heat worked until a couple weeks ago. Now it blows out cold air. The car temp gauge sometimes reads hot but does not overheat - I can turn the car off and later the gauge reads normal - my brother said have the radiator flushed - what do you think?
I have a 95 dodge spirit - it blows out cold air no heat the thermostat has been changed last year -help!?
    possible causes-

1- blocked heater core or heater hose

    2- low level of antifreeze

3- a worn out water pump. i've seen cars where the vanes on the water pump impeller are worn away from rust in the system. without the vanes the pump cannot move enough water to run the heater. Notice !! if this is the reason the next thing to go wrong will be a cracked head from the engine overheating. it can do this without giving any warning like a high temp guage or idiot light.

4- while i doubt a plugged radiator is the problem it is possible.

5- its possible that the problem is in the deflector vane that mixes outside air with heated air inside the ductwork. many cars no longer control the heat by the water flow but do so by mixing outside air with heated air. usually its a broken control cable here

if your system is vacume controlled them it could be a loose or blocked line or a bad diaphram

    a few easy tests you can do yourself;

1- with a cold engine remove the hoses going to the heater coil, use a garden hose to run water through the coil. you should get a nice full stream flowing through it

2- also with a cold engine remove the radiator cap and start the car. run until it warms up enough to open the termostat. check to see how much flow there is in the system. again there should be a fast full flow through the radiator.

3- check the control cable for function or if possible check the deflector vane [ you may have to check the vane if your system is vacume controlled]
I have a 95 dodge spirit - it blows out cold air no heat the thermostat has been changed last year -help!?
Make sure the antifreeze level is accurate first. If so, the coolant may not be within spec and may need to be exchanged. Could also be a blocked heater core...
your brother could be right bad as hate to say the dealer may be your best option may have in countered problem before
Make sure your anti freeze is the right strenght get a tester and test it should be good to -30 or you might need to blow out your heater core ask around for a honest mehcanic
you might want to take it to another mechanic and ask about a new heater core
make sure the antifreeze is level and mixed right
It could be the heater coil.
No heat in car---means no coolant .circulating thru htr.core.

#1 Feel top radiator hose(,not hot) at temp of eng, mid range, take

top radiator hose loose from Rad. connection.Start car water should come out fast.Reconnect. Radiator fan,it should come on,with eng temp mid range, look at it ,let it cycle a few times

#2 If fan does come on ,watch it cycle a few times,Sometimes fan can be intermitent/Relay

#3 no fan could be relay or fan motor,Unplug connecter at fan and run a wire from fan connection to pos batt.Fan should operate .

#4 This is a step I did after working on vehicle that had temp prob.

no heat at top radiator hose/I disconnected top radiator hose and

started eng,as soon as water started flowing from top hose,I put host on top radiator connection/summary air lock in system.CAUTION only connect or disconnect Hose when Eng is cool.
poor circulatiom can cause no heat.flush radiator may help .check if blend door. one under dash is broken or you are loosing vacum under the dadh some cars do use vacum to adjustheat setting

    My car is overheating?

I have a 02 cavalier, manual, overhead cam, i've changed the thermostat and all seemed well. As soon as I start to sit and idle it's starts going up again. The AC is cold as usual until idling then warm air comes through the vents. Anyone know what this could be?
    My car is overheating?
Cooling fan not working. Blown fuse, bad fan motor or bad temp sender so computer doesn't know to turn fan on.

A quick check of the fan is to turn the AC on and look at the fan, it should be running. If not something is wrong.

Unless you're good at electrical take it to a shop.

Don't butcher the car by hot wiring power to the fan, it will only cost you more in the long run.
    My car is overheating?
Check out the cooling fan for not working...it should be on all the time when the a/c is on. If not, check the fuses and relay.

    rkb
if ya have an electric fan it is not working while yer sittin still. it doesn't matter when yer movein
    1. Check your coolant level. It could be running low.

    2. The engine fan might not be working for whatever reason.

    3. The water pump might not be working.

    4. You could have leaking or clogged water/coolant lines.
Maybe the engine is low on oil.

i heard a chain like noise while it was over heating and i was almost home so i kept on driving but it sounded like a chain every time i like stepped on the gas... ps its not the head.. ive changed, radiator, fan clutch, thermostat, t-stat housing.. so what else?
What is this noise i heard on my car while it was overheating?
You should have stopped and turned off the engine as soon as you noticed the overheating. By continuing to drive, you may have caused further and permanent damage.

The noise is speculation ( especially not knowing what type of vehicle you have ) but it could have been the timing chain, valves, scorched rod or crank bearings, etc.

on the bottom passenger side of the radiator
1985 Buick Lesabre Custom; where is the outlet on the radiator to let the fluid out?
Its either on the left or right side bottom of the radiator. I think its the left side.
If you can't find it you can always loosen the lower radiator hose instead.

Car hesitates to start after no driving it for a month. PLEASE HELP?

I have a 96 Volvo 850. don't know the miles at the moment. I went on a trip for about a month. When i got back I tried to start my car, the first time it started fine but the drive was alittle jerky like it was losing its gusto. Later that same day i tried to start the car and it took forever, it would start then turn off or just not start at all. the engine would just keep revving up.

A month before i left for my trip i had some repairs donr on the car, replaced thermostat and replaced spark plugs because it was having the same problem. When it was repaired the car worked perfectly and then i left town. Oh also while i was gone the weather changed .When i left it was hot outside, and i returned to cold weather. I thought because it was sitting for a month and the air is cold that it just needs to be driven around and get warmed up, but the car wont stay on long enough for me to warm it up, and when i drive it around neighborhoodhood, then minute i try to slow down, the car shuts off.

The oil change, and tune up were all around the same time. Serious answers only, Im not in the mood for answers that try to freak you out about some $2000 problem that i find out later was all wrong and not that serious and only cost me $50. Sorry i have to put that in because sometimes people on this site like to get crazy.

Anyways im curious to know what it could be, i like to have ideas before i go to the mechanic. Im thinking of just changing the spark plugs again, idk maybe they were faulty. The spark plugs are pretty new though, less then 1000miles on them. keep in mind the car ran perfect before my trip and no one else drove it while i was gone.
Car hesitates to start after no driving it for a month. PLEASE HELP?
your grasping, you're trying to solve the problem and then you want me to be serious. You haven't even touched on the issues. I would find a local mechanic and have them keep the car overnight and ask them to put some gauges on the car, e.g. fuel pressure gauges and others to see what they read when the car comes alive the next day or if you can put it there for a month, that's when you need to see what the gauges read. Lets be serious, how can you make a $2000 problem a $20 problem, you can't a mechanic if honest will charge what the job is worth, others won't.
Car hesitates to start after no driving it for a month. PLEASE HELP?
There could be a lot of things going on. The plugs should be fine if only 1000 miles ago. I would bet that when you had them replaced that was not the problem. It is probably an intermittent problem that coincidentally went away temporarily when you had the work done. Take it to a Volvo specialist and tell them everything, exactly what the symptoms are and what work you had done recently. It sounds like the shop you took it to just threw parts at it instead of diagnosing it. I know this is not an answer, but a list of things to do, but I really don't think it was fixed last time and there are too many things that it could be to list.

What would be some solutions to a car over heats.?

The car is a 00 elicpse. I have changed the cooling temp sensor, thermostat and it still over heats. o yeah the fans dont turn on either
What would be some solutions to a car over heats.?
The fan is important, make sure that works.

Also, check your amount of freon in the car.
What would be some solutions to a car over heats.?
well the car is overheating because the fan does not work! Check the fan switch.
Uh, it's the fan....get that working, and your problem is fixed. If not try checking the radiator or try cahning the coolant.

I think maybe move to Alaska where a hot car is needed in January!
open the hood, on the right hand side shoudl be a whojabober, you will want to unscrew it(counter clockwise mind you) inside will be a thingamajig, remove the thingamajig and replace with a widget, than screw back on the whojabober and wala, you have a workign car
Either the fan switch of the fan is seized up.
    Low coolant ---Dirty radiator
I almost bought an eclipse and 2/ mechanics told me they are good cars only to 50,000. miles. hope this is not the case for you.
First, fix the fans..and see what that does. Then and/or at the same time..check the radiator..and make sure you have it full, coolant level is appropriate..and it is not leaking. If it is leaking, get some sealant that you pour into the radiator and then refill it.That should fix it.Otherwise take it to the dealer,or a mechanic.
There can be several reasons for a car to overheat. Someone has already mentioned low coolant. In addition to low coolant the thermostat could be sticking, there could be a hole in one of the radiator hoses or heater hoses or even a hole in the radiator or it needs to be flushed to get rid of sediment that will block coolant flow.

Lots of causes and if you aren't mechanically minded you should have a mechanic look into the problem.
start buy checking the fan is working at the radiator there is a simple check for doing this 1 st with the hood up and motor runing turn on the ac or defrost look to see if the fan is running if it has 2 fans ther are other thing i can help you with budmanss396@yahoo.com
Since you sound some what mechanically inclined try this. After a short drive to warm the car up run your hand over the radiator, Does it feel the same in all spots or are there spots hotter and colder? If so the radiator is plugged. Take care even though the fans do not work as since the are electric they can turn on at anytime. If your ans do not work you will need to fix that problem as well.
The fan might have some problem. Also check for the coolant and oil levels.
fan problem. try running for a few minutes, fan should be running once temp becomes higher than what it should be. if the fan still not working, check the fan by if it is working by running a + wire from the battery to the + wire of the fan. if it run, then it is ok. the culprit might be the temperature sensor switch.

  • I changed the radiator hose but the car is still running hot?

Could it be the thermostat? How can I tell
I changed the radiator hose but the car is still running hot?
Check to see that the electric fan that cools the radiator is coming on when the car is running hot. If not you need to replace the cooling fans and control relay.Check for radiator blockage, remove radiator to replace with new to repair problem.Try replacing the thermostat, sometimes thermostats can open partially causing the effect you describe. Replace thermostat with new to recheck system.Have a pressure check done to see if antifreeze is still leaking. Check near the water pump for leaks, and check if see if the antifreeze is circulating, it will get real hot.
I changed the radiator hose but the car is still running hot?
    thermostat
    thermostat is sticking
Make sure you add your coolant!!!! :-)
thermostats are cheap and easy to replace. I would go ahead and change it out if you aren't sure. What prompted you to change the hose in the first place?
I would suggest the thermostat. The %26quot;very intelligent%26quot; person who asked why you changed the radiator hose I guess didn't realize that you changed it because your car was overheating! lol

Also, you should check your coolant reservoir and make sure you have it above the min line and below the max line.

    Good luck!
    Cooling systems are simple.

If they have water/coolant and it is circulating as is is intended it is working.

The thermostat if stuck can cause it to over heat.

because its a pressurized system (pressure causes the boiling temp to be higher) if the cap is bad it can cause problems.

Also if the radiator has has radiator stop leak put in it, that will restrict water flow.

last thing is water pump but that is easy to determine. obvious loud noise from barrings or open cap and see if water is circulating.

If you have a bad head gasket that will cause loss of coolant in time (short/or long) foam in the coolant and also cause high temps.

To test thermo you heat engine and squeeze the hose or you remove it put it in a pot on the stove with water and heat the water. See what temp it opens at or if it sticks. easier to just replace for $6
Changing the hose doesn't stop your car from overheating (unless the hose is leaking -- but then you would have seen it).

And adding more antifreeze doesn't do anything either. Your radiator should be filled up to the top with a mixture of 50/50 water/antifreeze mixture. If your radiator is not full, then that is why it is over heating.

Like everyone else said, it is the thermostat that allows water to circulate through your engine. If it is old, it might be sticking. Replace it next.
i have the best idea for helping with this problem. what kind of freaking car do you have. each car can have its own little set of common problems.
the radiator needs to be full and yes it can be the thermostat or the fan not working, the water pump or the cooling system needs flushing out.

What does it mean if the car only heats up while im driving?

When I drive the temperature seems to go up. But if Im idling in park it never moves. What could cause this? Ive changed the timing belt, replaced the water pump timing belt, water pump, thermostat, hardwired the fan, and changed the radiator. Im driving a 1990 Honda Accord.
What does it mean if the car only heats up while im driving?
sounds like ur heater core is stopping up and the faster ur motor runs the more pressure u make so try reversing ur hoses on the core
What does it mean if the car only heats up while im driving?
Maybe it is the transmission that is getting hot and transferring heat so it seems it is coming from the engine.
Your heater core may be partially clogged or you may have an air pocket in the cooling system. Check the blender door in the heater assembly as well.

    good luck........
depending on how much it goes up is the key. Check with spec for the cooling system in your veh. If the temp goes up then the fan and stat open the it goes back down this is normanl. If it goes to high start with changing the stat and radiatior fluid.
Make sure that you are not driving in low gear.
well it's happening because the engine is creating heat faster than it can cool itself off. I say take it into a shop and see if another problem is preventing the coolant system from working properly.
It could mean your driving to fast! No it could really mean your out of radiator fluid, your belt on your fan could be off or lose, or your water pump might be going out. A simple temporary solution is to drive with your heat on, on full power
OK if anyone says transmission they're lying its the heater core or radiator that's doing that
First of all you shouldn't have hard wired the fan. Not trying to be the bad guy hear but its set up that way for a good reason. If it is going up while driving it is supposed to but only till about half then the fan will come on but since its hard wired it is all ways on therefore it shouldn't go passed half. If it does and this happens within say five min. sounds like a thermostat issue even new ones go bad and make sure its installed properly. If all the parts have been changed and all seems to be in order the only other thing is a blown head gasket.

? on car 94 dodge intreped car heater problem?

i changed the heater-core and the new thermostat, car will not blow warm or hot air in the car vents. why
? on car 94 dodge intreped car heater problem?
Maybe the mechanism (not sure what its called) that swings the door is messed up. What I mean by door, is a door that blocks the cold air vent. If the car is running and you turn the fan to off, you can hear this little electrical motor, barely that is closing the door. The reason I said this because for a while I was barely getting hot air. Lasted for a week. Then on a whim, I turn the knob (blue/red bars) all the way to cold, waited for 10 secs and turned it back to full hot. It worked instantly when I did that. About once a month it does that. When its on full hot, its more cold than hot. All I do is turn the knob to full cold air, wait 10 secs, and voila, works everytime. You might not be quite that lucky but worth a try. I have a 99 intrepid, so it might be a little different. Only other thing I can think of is that theres a block in the hose to the heater core.
? on car 94 dodge intreped car heater problem?
yeah it sounds like vent door motor/actuator is no good

Why is my car running hot but heater blowing cold air.?

2001 chevy impala 3.4L. The car is running hot but the heater blows cold air.I changed the t thermostat but that didn't solve the problem. Please help me solve this problem or direct me to a very helpful website. if it help my top hose is hot while my bottom hose is cold also my radiator cap be cold when the car is over heating. I get no steam or bubbling sound just temp gauge going to over heated level. Thanks in advance
Why is my car running hot but heater blowing cold air.?
The no heat is a good clue that its not the thermostat. Sounds like you have a bad air pocket or a flow problem.

Is there a bleeder near the top of the engine? First thing to try is to get all the air out of the system.

Are you in a really cold area? Is it possible your anti-freeze was too weak and partially froze?

Worst case scenario would be a head gasket issue. So cross your fingers!

** here is why it wouldn't be a thermostat.

    1) the thermostat is closed until a temperature is reached to open and coolant starts to flow to keep the engine cool, however the flow still goes to the heater core whether the t-stat is closed or not. This is how the heater core gets warm coolant to heat the cab even though the t-stat may have not opened. If we had to wait for a t-stat to open on a 10 degree day, we wouldn't get warm air for a very long time.

    2) even if you put the t-stat in backwards, it would still be able to open to allow coolant flow. Yes the hot coolant will be touching the wrong side of the t-stat, but it will be enough to transfer heat to the spring, thus opening the t-stat. Again, you would still be getting hot coolant to the heater core in a properly flowing and operating system.
Why is my car running hot but heater blowing cold air.?
I can pretty much guarantee its the heater core. Its plugged with that god awful Dex-Cool. That is the worst coolant ever. You need to pull the heater core hoses off the engine, back flush the heater core with a water hose in the outlet side of the heater core. You may have to do it more than once. That Dex-Cool tends to gel up and clog stuff like you would not believe. It is the culprit in the basis of a lawsuit against GM for the loss of intake gaskets from Dex-Cool. I would flush that entire system and use a different coolant. It is IMPERATIVE that when you do, ALL the dex-cool must be removed from the system. It and the new coolant cannot mix at all.

Wow, I am an idiot. Disregard my post above, I didnt read the whole question. Yes, it seems as though it could be the thermostat and or the water pump. I would lean towards the t-stat though but not rule out the pump. Just changed the waterpump in a 97 Taurus cause of no heat and over heating. The impellers on the pump were worn dorn to the plate.
My first thought, did you put the thermostat in right side up,also could be a air pocket, fill cooling system up, leave off the Radiator cap while the motor is running, let it idle for a while, with the cap off.

Add coolant do not add water! Check water pump belt, make sure it is tight, and in good shape!

If the water pnmp is bad it will leak water out the bottom of pump!
Make sure you have the thermostat in properly. Sounds like you may have it in upside down. If that's not it your water pump may be bad. Look in the radiator and see if you have flow.
air in system, head gasket, t-stat in backwards, plugged radiator.
    air pocket

    bleed the system
Unfortunately, I have some bad news for you. You probably have a blown head gasket. The outflow from the cylinder that has the problem stops all water circulation. See if the circulation starts again if the radiator cap is removed. This will vent combustion gases and allow normal flow. So if you run the engine with the cap off, and heater function returns, and then you put the cap back on and the heater function quits, you almost certainly have a blown head gasket.

To confirm this, call around to some of your local garages. Tell them you suspect a head gasket leak and want to know if they have a chemical tester. If they do, take the car down to them and to have them run the test (shouldn't cost too much, and it only takes 5 minutes.) They place a glass tube with a rubber seal over your radiator tank opening or your expansion tank opening, put in some test fluid, and use a rubber bulb to suck air through the test fluid. If the fluid changes color, it means

there ARE combustion gases in your cooling water, which indicates a blown head gasket. What do you do then? Well, the first step would be to try one of the head-gasket-sealers-in-a-can that the auto parts stores sell. This is the cheapest for a first attempt. Will probably run you $10 to $70 depending on which magic sealer you use. If this works, you are good to go. If it doesn't, the next step will be a head gasket change.

My car heater is only blowing cold air?

it is a 1996 pontiac grand am, and today is the coldest it has been all winter and now my heater is not working at all. I was told to change the thermostat? Will this work?
My car heater is only blowing cold air?
check your coolant level, if it is ok and your engine shows normal operating Temperature, then check your heater hoses that are going into the heater box, if one is hot and the other is cold, then you probably have a plugged heater core if they are both hot then it is probably your heater control unit that is not working, some of these are vacuum controlled some are electric, and some are a cable.
My car heater is only blowing cold air?
did you check your antifreeze. not enough will cause it to blow only coll air
    Check the heater core.
Sandra has a good point also, but I would replace the thermostat. It is probably stuck open not allowing the coolant to warm up.
Americans Cars that was built during Ex president Bill Clinton/Al Gore on his 2 term was built weak! They break down alot why because Bill Clinton with his lie never went to automarker to see how americans cars was built! That is why he lost in 2008! Wake up!
It may be one of the answers to your problem. Be sure the system is full and circulating properly with a 50/50 mixture (-40F) of coolant. In a

car that old the Heater Core may require flushing so that your car will

heat properly. You should be able to get 150F + heat at your vents if

the heater if functioning as it should. Put a big blanket or sleeping bag

in the back seat just in case. Good luck!
    YES !
Check heater and A/C dash controls plus the heater control valve that

shuts the hot water on and off to the heater core. Might check to make

sure thermostat is not stuck in the open position.
Make sure you car has coolant then run your car int eh driveway for 20 minutes without driving it. This will heat up your car. Turn on your heater. If it is hot then after you drive it it cools down. It's your thermostat.

If it doesn't' get hot. then i would guess it's the heater core is blocked or your system might have a valve broken.
Start by checking the fluid level. You may have to do this more than once if air pocket in heater. No problem. If the thermostat is worn and stuck it will usually show up if you have a temp. guage. There are two hoses (about 3/4%26quot; in diameter) running from engine to heater box. One should be quite warm. Try the fluid level first. More info. please

  • My 99' Jeep Grand Cherokee Thermostat keeps going up and down. Any Help?

Hello. I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee and everytime I drive my tempature thermostat keeps going up and down. Maybe I need a new one? I'm not sure. I just had my radiator replaced and now i see coolant leaking under the car. I didn't change the thermostat when I had got the radiator replaced. and the heat still works when the thermostat goes all the way down. Please help
My 99' Jeep Grand Cherokee Thermostat keeps going up and down. Any Help?
Sounds like either the thermostat is sticking, or the radiator is low on fluid. You said you can see where it is leaking, that is where I would start. Bring it back to the place that installed the radiator.

Why dont the heat in my car work?

I have changed the heater core, thermostat , and the coolant level is normal, what could the problem be? Oh and there is no heater control valve on this model. Any info would be helpful.
Why dont the heat in my car work?
Before starting the car check your radiator fluid. Remove the radiator cap only when the engine is cold and see if the radiator is full, if not, fill it up. Does the overflow jug have fluid in it? Make sure it's at the cold fill line. See if there is green fluid on the ground. If the radiator and overflow jug are empty you may have a leak. If all of this is full then you go to the next step. Check with your parts store to see what temperature thermostat belongs in your car. Start the car and bring it up to running temperature. Take a meat thermometer and check the water in the reservoir, it should be between 190 degrees Fahrenheit and 210 degrees Fahrenheit or the temperature you were told by the parts store. If it does not get up to running temperature, change the thermostat. If you have the proper temperature check the hoses going through the firewall to the heater. Are they hot? If not hot, a valve that works with the engine vacuum may be stuck,Or you may not have vacuum going to it. Sometimes it is a cable that works the valve.
Why dont the heat in my car work?
With the vehicle at operating temperatures and the heater on, feel the two heater hoses. Are they both hot? If not, hot water is not circulating through the heater core. Find and remove the blockage and the heater will work.
No heater control valve..... so you cant adjust from cold to hot on the control inside your car? I have never seen that before.....
    Perhaps the heat exchange?
Heres's a tip; buy a new Merecedes-Benz SLR McLaren; they only cost about 2 bucks and sell that piece of crap Kia that you are driving.
In my Ford F150, the problem actually was the switch on the dash board.

It controls both heat and A/C, and neither was working although the other components were all in order.

Your mechanic can do an electronic check for this switch and tell you it that's the problem.
This happened to my niece. There is a little door in your dashboard behind the heating/cooling buttons and radio. If the door is broken or missing, the heat won't work. She went on the internet. She paid alot for a new part, while this guy on the internet car website paid eleven dollars.
Probably in the a/c %26amp;heater controller but can only guess due to missing info...

This model uses a cable acuated door to let hot air in. It is all controlled by the heater control assembly. if you will go to the site below you can get a full picture and how to replace the components mentioned.

My car over cools on the freeway. I think it's a faulty thermostat. would this also cause poor gas mileage?

it's normal on the streets. so whenever i drive faster the temp drops down even if I have been driving long time. i also used to get around 340 a tank, now about 275. i changed the ported vacuum switch. i'm also wondering if the thermostat has any effect on the pvs. thanks
My car over cools on the freeway. I think it's a faulty thermostat. would this also cause poor gas mileage?
Yes a faulty thermostat will definitely cause the symptoms that you described. In fact that is the only thing that can cause it. And, yes it will also cause you to get less MPG because your car runs richer when the engine is colder. The thermostat wouldn't have any direct influence on the PVS, because all the thermostat does is direct the engine coolant to either recirculate in the engine or go through the radiator. When the thermostat is stuck open all of hte coolant will go through the radiator and thus cool the engine excessively under conditions of high air flow through the radiator, this in turn will cause a lower temperature of the engine might affect the PVS.
My car over cools on the freeway. I think it's a faulty thermostat. would this also cause poor gas mileage?
Yes, over cooling can cause a decrease in mileage. Modern cars are designed to run within certain ranges, when the motor is too cool the computer thinks it's in a warm up mode and enriches the fuel mixture-which leads to lower fuel mil age.

What and why should I do to fix my car after 2 years of no use?

I have my bmw520 i off the road for last 2 years ,I don't think weather still in the cooling sistem, and now I want to use it again ,please can you tel me what to do before and how to top up with Water, and should I change the thermostat and oil filter. thanks
What and why should I do to fix my car after 2 years of no use?
change your oil, check all your fluids like break fluid and transmission fluid maybe a new oil filter, let it run for a little while before you actualy drive it! bets of luck
What and why should I do to fix my car after 2 years of no use?
Before you even try to start it, remove the spark plugs. Spray a little bit of butyl cellosolve or cylinder misting chemical into the spark plug holes, and let it sit overnight. This will unseize the pistons from the sidewalls and prevent any engine damage. With a little guidance, you should be able to turn the engine over without the plugs in it to force out the cleaner. Then install the plugs, and start the fellow up for real! I can't figure out what you are saying about the coolant. Use only BMW coolant!!! Also, be prepared to change the brake fluid, as it spoils every 2-3 years. This should prevent expensive brake repairs, like master cylinder and piston damage. Read you owner's manual, if you still have one. What year is this dude??

  • Is Thermostat bad?Car needle on HOT. 90 acura integra?

I have a 90 acura integra. 2 days ago, I was driving on the freeway and there was bumper to bumper traffic, when i started to notice that the temp needle was going up. It went up to almost where the H is. So, I had to get off the freeway. Once i got off the freeway and was driving on the streets, the temp needle went back down, to its normal position. I checked the reserve tank and it was good. I changed the hoses and water pump like 2 yrs ago. What can be the problem? any help?
Is Thermostat bad?Car needle on HOT. 90 acura integra?
First thing to check is if you hear your electric fan coming on. It's proper operation is critical in your Acura. Also if the car has alot of miles a head gasket may be starting to fail. Good luck and hope this helps.
Is Thermostat bad?Car needle on HOT. 90 acura integra?
to check if your car is overheating because of the thermostat, take it out and run the car, if its still on hot, then its not the thermostat, their purpose is to warm your car up fast by not running any coolant and when its warm, to cool it by it opening.

the head is where all your valves and cam gears are. under that is your block where the pistons and the rods go up and down, inbetween is the head gasket which gets warn out from long life.

on a integra its not alot of work. used to own a 94 integra.

to change the gasket, take off the valve cover, theres bolts that go into the block threw the head, and take the belt off, the head will just come off, change the gasket, put the head back on, take the cams and align them at 12 o'clock by looking at the cam gears from the side, they will have arrows. put everything back together and it should be good.

Overheating issues on 86 Lincoln Town car?

I have changed the water pump, thermostat and hoses and the car was running fine until the other night I had the ac on and once I turned the car of there was steam coming from the compressor area and now the car runs hot I have no leaks any where and cannot find the culprit any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Overheating issues on 86 Lincoln Town car?
I know they were known for head gaskets going bad, that may be it.

I there coolant in the oil? I would look.
Overheating issues on 86 Lincoln Town car?
did you put the thermostat in the correct way? Is the coolant circulating? Water in your oil? Could be a head gasket.

How do I bypass the core heating system in my chevy 1999 malibu?

My car overheats lately I changed the thermostat and the sensor, I also took apart the fans, ran a toggle switch from the inside of my car directly to the fans. Still over heats!! Please help!
How do I bypass the core heating system in my chevy 1999 malibu?
well you dont want to bypass anything.

Overheating can be from a few things, some of which you already tried.

Sensor and thermostat are quick and easy, you tried them.

    Make sure belts are tight....

    Fan is running...You tried.

Water pump might be bad... need to check, before starting core, and while cool, remove radiator cap, start car, as it warms up you should see radiator fluid flowing in radiator, if your not sure get a shops help.

Also engine problems like a head gasket could cause this.

At this point I would check belt and water pump.
How do I bypass the core heating system in my chevy 1999 malibu?
so you made it so the radiator fan runs all the time?? and you are sure that the fan is actually running?

And you have a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water??

And you are sure that the thermostat is opening up?

And you are sure that the radiator cap is holding pressure? ( the cap is actually on the plactic over flow bottle just like the 98 malibu,,i believe)

Okay there is one more thing left: since you have an aluminum motor the coolant also circulates around the intake manifold and the cylinder head--this is to prevent any of the parts from warping from differnt temps on differnt parts.

SO there is a bleeder on a coolant line to get out all the air than can be trapped from this arrangement.

You have v6 engine? open the hood and look at the top of the motor in the front left side. You see the black metal line,,and the T connection to the motor,,with the 1/4 inch nut on the top?? thats a bleeder for the coolant line. Warm the car a little and use it to purge the air.

It may be the reason you are overheating.
Have radiator flow-tested. Might be clogged. May also be the water pump itself. And check to make sure you don't have a bleeder line on your engine for the coolant, it may have an air pocket in the pump. They are typically little long bronze looking screws on top of the water pump. Check coolant level as well, both in the radiator and your reservoir.
bypassing heater core will do nothing but give u no heat.....

    flush System and change thermostat...
wel if its over heating bypassing heatcore is not going to do muchok first thermostat control the flow of coolant so it can cool in radiator... so doing that first was right thing but id bet if its still over heating is that the radiator is dirty and needs to be flush out or dip at a raditor shop redo the fans back to the way they was better they shoul drun when they need to cool not all the time.. most likely with that age of car just a dirty radiator you could remove it and take to a radiator shop ask them to boil it out it will then be like new again i bet thats the problem
all you do is take the 2 hoses off the heater core, get a piece of pipe and 2 clamps. you won,t have heat this winter.

Peugeot 307 hdi fan flattens the car battery?

the coolant fan on my peugeot 307 hdi comes on and stays on for a long time even after you turn the engine off and it is flattening the car battery.i have changed the coolant temperature switch/thermostat but the problem still exists.does anyone know what the problem is.
Peugeot 307 hdi fan flattens the car battery?
The cooling fan should not drain your battery, Some car fans do run on after you have stopped and the ignition turned off but it shouldn't be for long.

It's possible there is a fault, more likely your battery may be unwell and not up to it's full potential.

Car is losing coolant from the transaxle coolant hose?

I have a 97 Honda civic. I am current having issues with coolant loss causing my car to run hot. It seems to be coming out of one of the transaxle coolant hose. On top of that my coolant reservoir remains full and seems to be leaking as well. What is going on? I have got a new radiator, and thermostat. There is no coolant in the oil when I change it, but I am noticing a small amount of coolant dripping out of the valve cover.
Car is losing coolant from the transaxle coolant hose?
You have a leak. You've identified where the leak is coming from. Now you're supposed to fix it.

The coolant reservoir recovery system doesn't work when you have a leak because the leak doesn't allow the system to build up pressure or vacuum to move the coolant from the reservoir to the radiator.

    On last thing, when you say %26quot;On top of that my coolant reservoir remains full and seems to be leaking as well.%26quot;

It remains full but seems to be leaking sounds contradictory.

Is this the right thing to do to a shitty car mechanic?

1-$280 took my husband's car because it was overheating

-water reservoir was replaced and the radiator was flushed-as well as an oil change-car overheated the next day

#2-$350 took car back and had the water pump replaced and had the radiator pressure tested-car overheated same day

#3-took car back and had thermostat replaced, supposed to have gotten car back at 11 then 4 then 6, didn't get it back. all of my husband's work stuff was in there and the mechanic had some shallow family emergency excuse about why he never returned the car

So after all of this crap, I'm thinking that I need to just go and get the car and say thank you for all of the FREE work you've done on it, and not pay him a cent for the third time we had to take it in. Fair or not?
Is this the right thing to do to a shitty car mechanic?
You can't do that, it's illegal. If you do that, he can have the cops knocking at your door.

I'd start by being nice to them and just asking for a hefty discount because you've obviously paid for work that wasn't necessary. See if they play ball, you might be surprised.

If that doesn't work and you want to be nasty with a shop that's not getting the problem right here's how the law works.

You don't owe for labor on his guess and check work. You owe the parts, you do have new parts installed after all whether it was time to replace them or not. They're supposed to be trained experts, not just parts changers though.

Take a close look at your last two bills and tell him you've familiarized yourself with laws regarding incorrect/unnecessary repairs and you are demanding he apply the labor you've already paid on the last two jobs to this third job. That labor can go towards the entire last bill, parts and labor and tax.

If you decide to go that route be prepared to never return to that shop--why would you anyway, it sounds like they've got no idea what they're doing. If you want to make sure this goes your way, look up the actual laws in your area and print them out. findlaw.com, search auto mechanic.

I wouldn't let them keep the car. You don't want someone that knows how angry you are to have that car in their possession for any longer than necessary. If it comes down to it, pay with your credit card and then sue them in small claims court.
Is this the right thing to do to a shitty car mechanic?
I my god how some people pose a question knowingly they are indicing people in error is outrageous

You should have done that the second time you brought it in, it's customary for them not to charge you. Why didn't you bring it up then?
if you owe for repairs you can be taken to small claims for the work done. However, you can file a claim with your local business bureau as well as the state bureau of auto repair. they may be able to recover some of your expenses. In future just make sure you take to a AAA rated shop with SAE mechanics.
defiantly..... im surprised they didn't check the thermostat in the first place... and they should let it run after the first fix to see if it was fixed.... plus if it ended up Just being the thermo.. u just paid big bucks for nothing,,,,, go get it back now
You have what is known as a dipstick ... not a mechanic working on your car. Obviously no diagnostic process other than the %26quot;Throw Parts%26quot; method is being used.

I suspect that your problem is either that the cooling fan is not working or the radiator is clogged. But that should have been identified the first trip....

Three strikes and out - do not pay any remaining balance and go elsewhere ...
question is, did you authorize the work? if you did you are bound to pay. i dont like mechanics like this. i had a job where i messed up on diagnosis and ended up taking a 600 loss...i never tried to charge for it. if you didnt authorize the work, then its all gravy
It is pretty obvious to me that the diagnostic of the over heating of this car was not done in a proper fashion and professionalism.

If i was to have done this car here is the procedure.

#1 Take a pressure test of the radiator,

    and look for leaks,

get the engine warmed up to see if there was good circulation of the coolant,

This would tell me if the water pump was in good order,

I would have checked the top and lower end of the radiator if the rad was blocked or not,

Check for proper heat inside the car to see if the heater is producing a good amount of heat,

    Remove the thermostat and check the heat sensor in boiling water and check if it would open at 100 to 195degrees , if not it needs to be replaced,;

An honest garage or mechanic does not replace unnecessary parts!

He must give a detailed estimate of the repairs to be done with absolute certainty.

When an agreement has been reached between parties then he can proceed with the work and guarantee that it will work and perform as required.

In your situation you can prove that the work was not done properly and paid bills to prove what should have been done in the first place.

So, do not take the car without paying as he could put a mechanics lean on your car and sell it for what its worth after 30 days, and you loose.

Report him to the better business bureau with a copy of your repairs and bills, and then take him to small claims court where he will have to prove beyond a reasonable doupt that the car is in good order prior to the second repairs, third repair, where the car was not functionning still.

He will have to re-imburse you and pay court cost plus have a bad rating at the BBB and loose a lot of clientel.

Be fair to the system, pay it and you will see what an honest judge do to a garage like it.

i have worked on cars 20 years,me i would just get the car and NOT PAY SHT!! THAT WOULD BE FAIR!!!
