My car heater is only blowing cold air?

it is a 1996 pontiac grand am, and today is the coldest it has been all winter and now my heater is not working at all. I was told to change the thermostat? Will this work?
My car heater is only blowing cold air?
check your coolant level, if it is ok and your engine shows normal operating Temperature, then check your heater hoses that are going into the heater box, if one is hot and the other is cold, then you probably have a plugged heater core if they are both hot then it is probably your heater control unit that is not working, some of these are vacuum controlled some are electric, and some are a cable.

did you check your antifreeze. not enough will cause it to blow only coll air
Check the heater core.
Sandra has a good point also, but I would replace the thermostat. It is probably stuck open not allowing the coolant to warm up.
Americans Cars that was built during Ex president Bill Clinton/Al Gore on his 2 term was built weak! They break down alot why because Bill Clinton with his lie never went to automarker to see how americans cars was built! That is why he lost in 2008! Wake up!
It may be one of the answers to your problem. Be sure the system is full and circulating properly with a 50/50 mixture (-40F) of coolant. In a

car that old the Heater Core may require flushing so that your car will

heat properly. You should be able to get 150F + heat at your vents if

the heater if functioning as it should. Put a big blanket or sleeping bag

in the back seat just in case. Good luck!
YES !
Check heater and A/C dash controls plus the heater control valve that

shuts the hot water on and off to the heater core. Might check to make

sure thermostat is not stuck in the open position.
Make sure you car has coolant then run your car int eh driveway for 20 minutes without driving it. This will heat up your car. Turn on your heater. If it is hot then after you drive it it cools down. It's your thermostat.

If it doesn't' get hot. then i would guess it's the heater core is blocked or your system might have a valve broken.
Start by checking the fluid level. You may have to do this more than once if air pocket in heater. No problem. If the thermostat is worn and stuck it will usually show up if you have a temp. guage. There are two hoses (about 3/4%26quot; in diameter) running from engine to heater box. One should be quite warm. Try the fluid level first. More info. please
