99 malibu had a closed thermostat i changed it this morning and what happened was?

originally the tstat was closed and all the coolant went through the overflow and overheated the car....i changed it this morning with a 190 degree tstat and ran the car and all the coolant was running through and a couple things happened....the check engine light was on i think its because i took off the throttle body....but then took it for a drive and the temp ran up and by the time we got home 5 minutes later it was in the red...and all i did was change the thermostat....i have no idea why the check engine light is on or why its running up that high...plz help!! im trying to fix this by today...

First you need to make sure you didn't put the thermostat in backwards Then you need to check the water pump to make sure it is working properly.

The check engine light can be cleared by removing the battery cable for 5 min. then replace the battery terminal ..

Did you add coolant? Also, make sure you have the radiator cap on correcty. With some you have to align the arrows with the overflow tube. Try those things and see how it works. The coolant under preasure raises the boiling point of the water, so it won't overheat as easily.
Sounds like your installing the t stat upside down.

When cold t stats are all closed. The sensing element is supposed to be down and in the hot water where it responds to coolant temp.

Your messing with the coolant was discovered by the computer and it warned you the engine is doing damage to itself.

Remove the battery cable for an hour or more and the computer will reset.
It could be another bad thermostat or the temp sending unit, take it to the autoparts store and have them tell you why the check engine light is on
You likely have air trapped in the cooling system as one possibility, and you need to park the car on a hill so that the radiator cap is higher than the heater core and engine etc. Then warm up the engine again with the cap removed and top off the coolant as needed after the thermostat opens and the engine is hot. Replace the cap and see if that fixes the problem.

Check to make sure you put it in properly. And then bleed out the air in the system. Most cars have a bleeder valve on the thermostat housing where all you need to do is start the car and open up the valve untill you have coolant coming out.
