these radiators are known to crack along the side seams causing a loss of coolant. you only need the fan around town and not on the highway, one way to check it is turn on the AC, that should turn the fan on at the same time.

All the other ideas are good too..

well depends that would have been first choice ok say it over heats fast or at speeds most likey radiator dirty or belt slip

try this type how to check over heating car hers a few links might help you find why if you have no leaks most likely radiator dirty which id remove and take to a radiator shop to be dip that wil be like new again but heres a few links
I would say go and check out your dradiator, broke hoses or a crack on the radiator itself, or even low fluid could be causing this.
Could it possibly be caused by a malfunctioning fan?
The heat sensor that connects to the radiator fan, may be defective.( the heat sensor, detects when the engine heat is rising above safe engine operating levels, an turns on the fan.

While you are driving, some cooling air flow is passing through the radiator,/ when you stop the vehicle from moving, the fan should provide the needed cooling air flow.

Check the engine compartment,to see if the radiator fan comes on at any time.

If the fan is functioning properly:

It may be a sludge buildup within the radiator (have your cooling system flushed, to remove any blockages.)

/ it may be a collapsed hose, (with the collapse on the inside, it is hard to see)

It may be the water pump.

The thermostat ( a thermostat, is designed for winter running ( it prevents the engine coolant from circulating, to the radiator, until the engine is heated to the proper performance level.)

It may be as simple as a out of adjustment fan belt. ( that turns the water pump.)
with the eng off,use two fingers to spin the fan.if it moves easily you need a fan clutch.if it only moves a short way its alrite.
It might be super dirty have you ever used a stop leak? Try flushing it out and refilling!
